Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I am contemplating buying PSK for nat gas exposure but I don't know the actual % of total royalties that are derived from nat gas. Do you have that data for both PSK and FRU? I would sell FRU to make the buy in spite of the fact that FRU has outperformed PSK slightly over the past year and div if much higher. I am attempting to partake in the success of the LNG facility on the west coast. Is this move wise and will it accomplish my intent?

Q: Relative to DIY investing, I am in the need of a suite of software (pay per use) that I use to assist with modeling my future retirement. The ability to model different scenarios based on; age, type/source of income, timing, and then to project yearly income and tax implications is necessary. I have recently explored PERC, Canadian Retirement Income Calculator, RazorPlan, and Cascade Financial. Is seems that fee-based advisors RazorPlan, for example, in turn, charge a considerable fee for the reports and/or advice. Might you have a preference or other recommendation?

Q: What do you think about buying TQQQ, for a risk-tolerant, long term investor who is interested in growth? The long term charts look very good, as long as one can tolerate the drawdowns. Might be a good time to get in now though.

Q: Can you suggest some US and Canadian high-quality value stocks with attractive valuations and, finally, that meet the "mundane" test. Heard a commentator discuss this recently. I think the idea is that if a high quality business is flashy, etc, its valuation would reflect that (say Coke or Berkshire Hathaway?). Other "mundane" companies would not (yet) have that prominence premium.

I'm not sure if this is the same as "deep value". Your comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Q: In the next two quarters, earnings will likely deteriorate in both the US and Canada as the effects of the fastest rate hikes in history start to apply. If these earnings seasons are ugly, will the market decline further? Or is the positioning of the fed (potentially pivoting/easing/stopping rate rises) more important than this?

Q: Hi there,

I am sitting on about 35% cash currently that I accumulated in mid August before the indexes rolled over (SPX ~4200). Obviously no one knows where the bottom is, but if you had to make an educated guess, where do you think the SPX will bottom out and when? What strategic would you use to deploy cash? Would you DCA over a couple tranches?

Thanks!
