Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I own the above Precious Metals companies having bought all over the past 4 or 5 years. Based on my cost all of them are in a profit position to varying degrees.

Each was bought for a somewhat different reason ie B2 because of heavy sell off n divi, Fortuna as a potential turnaround, Equinox as a turnaround .. similarly Wesdome.

I am always interested in holding good companies that have turnaround n takeout potential.

Which would you continue to hold and which would you sell to streamline my holdings keeping in mind AEM has performed well whilst some of the others have been following the general market updraft n may or may not have catalysts to drive them higher?

Q: My husband mainly holds ETF's in his TFSA - ZLB, VXC, ZNQ, and some BRK. ZNQ accounts for around 5% with the others split about evenly. Which one would you add new cash to today? Another option we have been looking at is adding VUG. I think there is a lot of overlap between VXC, ZNQ, and VUG. Of the three, which one or two do you like best? Thanks!

Q: If somebody mentioned already on this forum I missed it. Congratulations to 5i for having a handfull of stocks that they have endorsed to us members on making the TSX Top 30 list, https://www.tsx.com/en/news?id=1053 , the 30 best performers over the last 3 years. I, along with lots of your members I'd guess am very happy to own a few of the stocks on the list, tx to the team at 5i. What are a few names you'd guess at making the next list next?

Q: In your reply to Steve this morning, you said "We think it is important to watch, but there are other indicators that we are watching more closely such as credit spreads or commodity prices." Could you please expand on this? Thanks in advance.

Q: Hey team. I'm a senior, dividend investor and I have been investigating both Ishares XEI (S&P Comp High Div ETF) and Vanguards VDY (Vangaurd FTSE Canadian High Div Yield Index ETF).
They look pretty much the same with slightly different holdings with XEI having a slightly higher dividend. Looking for your advice as to which one has the edge on the other. I own XEI now.
My second question is on the Ishares ETF- FIE (Canadian Financial Monthly Income) Yield of 6.49% when I looked. I'm not real happy with the high MER of .80 Would you know of an equivalent ETF with a lower MER that I could research? Cheers and thanks for your expertise and advice. Bill

Q: Hello to you! I know these are different companies at different stages of their cycles. You very recently suggested BYD, and have relatively recently recommended the other two stocks. Would you be able to rank them in order of preference if you bought them today? I'm looking for the best midterm to long-term growth. I love the service, thank you!

Q: ERE today announced the sale of over 1 Billion in housing and commercial units. In addition a 41.13 special dividend and a 50% reduction in the dividend. I realize this will significantly improve the balance sheets, yet the company is small and will become much smaller. The stock price is up by 23c today. Is the stock worth keeping or should I sell it now. Will the share price gradually climb as it gets closer to the special dividend? What do you think of this sale?.

Q: Portfolio Cleanup Part 3:
I have needed to do this for a long time. These are a list of securities I have that are within a 15% profit or loss of where I purchased them.
Which ones to do see as an Add, Hold or Sell. Can you provide a short reason why for each. Thanks

Q: Watching this presentation reviewing their history would you consider a long term hold 5-10 years in a over weight position? This investor day video was quite informative but what is your opinion on it? Is there an issue of key man with Bruce Flat or do they have a deep bench?
