Q: Hi Everyone!! Peter, I always enjoy your article in the National Post. In this past one” Five things I wish I knew when I started out”…. You mentioned as one of your points , that companies that don’t need any money at all are the best investments . Could you please list a few Canadian and US companies that are in that situation?
Cheers,
Tamara

Q: I just noticed that someone already asked the same question as me regarding the US dollar reserve currency standing.
The only question I still have is if the above changed to say the China Yaun backed by gold, would all Western currencies take a big hit?
thanks,
Paul

Q: In your answer to a question from Bill C on Mar 22, you made the statement “Nor do RRSP account holdings”. Are you saying a T1135 form does not have to include US shares held in a RRSP or RRIF. Thanks … Cal

Q: Brian Acker appeared on BNN this week and strongly discouraged people from investing in oil companies. He said that no matter how high the oil price goes, company costs will exceed profits because of inflation.
What do you make of his analysis? Do you think a similar case can be made for mining companies? Which energy producers and gold/silver/copper miners are most likely to stay profitable in the face of rising costs? Thank you.

Q: Good morning, you have mentioned several times that Covered Call ETF's work best in sideways markets. I have the feeling that we will probably see the Markets basically moving sideways for a while. What is your opinion, thanks?
Q: In some interesting reading sent to my inbox by 5i, one of the articles by Joe Wiggins talked about long or short term investing and I see by the bar graph, if you are a one year investor it was a 55% return and if you left the investment for 10 years, it would be a 15% return. From what I see, it looks like you are better off being short term. Maybe you can interpret this better than I. There was a lot of heavy reading involved. Thank you,
Q: A recent guest on Market Call stated that while we have been in a dis-inflationary cycle for decades, we are now in a re-inflationary period which could go on for a long time. This means interest rates continuing to rise in steps over perhaps several years. First, could you comment on this view. I would like to hear your ideas about the direction of near term interest rates, as well as long term. I know that this is a predictive type of question but I highly value your opinions. Secondly if we are indeed in for a long stretch of gradually rising interest rates could this possibly mean a long term decline of growth stocks, or at least the ones that are not yet profitable. Thank you.

Does this combo seem Reasonable or any red flags here. This is for long term growth and the choices were limited. I value your thoughts.

Q: Is there a rule of thumb that you would suggest domestic investors should consider using for a targeted portfolio size before thinking about wandering into developed international and international equities, either ETFs or single coys?
Q: Hi There,
I just wanted to confirm that if you transfer a security from a cash account to a RRSP account, any accrued capital gain on the transferred securities on an in-kind contribution to an RRSP is immediately taxable to you, while any loss on such a transfer would be denied from being claimed as a capital loss.....is this correct!
If so, if you sold the security in the cash account and then transferred the cash to the RRSP, would you then be able to claim the capital loss?
Thank You,

Q: Hi,
This morning Hector had asked you about www.stockcharts.com This is not a question but comments.
1. On Cyber Monday, Stockcharts typically do a "Sale" . One can get up to 3 months extra if one subscribes for 12 months. So, you pay for 12 months but use it for 15 months.
2. The MID level subscription seems to offer a lot more than the Basic version. The Pro level, well, it is for the PROS!!
3. Their educational tools , some of which are freely available on You Tube, are very useful. One may want to look at these clips before they decide if it is for them or not.
Search with StockchartsTV
4. Tradingview, Finviz and even koyfin(the less expensive versions) are probably competitors.
Hope this helps.

Do you have any special discount from them for 5imembers.

Q: I watched the utube of Chris an analyst at 5i Research on Shopify. I wasn't aware of him. As a member of 5i Research, I am happy to have his knowledge available. Recently someone was looking for moving averages and Stockscores was mentioned. It doesn't seem to provide the 50 or 200 day moving averages for various stocks - we only saw the example (Facebook) which did not have that option. In the past I have seen the 50 and 200 day moving averages whether it was on Globe Investor or iTrade or Bloomberg or charts on your system. Would you be able to advise easy access to it? Thanks so much.
Q: Hi 5i Team- Although I am familiar with the following metrics/terms I am having difficulty differentiating them one from the other and having a clear understanding of what each one means. Could you explain the difference between earnings, net earnings and profit. Also what is the difference between cash flow and free cash flow. In addition does free cash flow automatically mean profitability. Thanks.
Q: Having recently watched on BNN an expert on technical analysis, could you provide me with your opinion on how important moving averages are and which ones are the best to look at - the 50 day moving average, 200 moving day average or other. Also where would be the best site to go to track these moving averages. I have never paid much attention to technical investing but am starting to think that it does have its place in assessing the success of a stock. Thanks.
Q: Hello friends,
I was wondering if you ever did this exercise to check if any of the three model portfolios sector allocations match the sector allocations proposed/suggested by the Portfolio Analytics.
For example, does the sector allocations for the Balanced Portfolio match the Balanced or Alpha-Balanced allocations suggested by the Portfolio Analytics?
Perhaps this would be a nice subject for a blog article that could also explain the rationale behind the differences (if any).
