Q: Merry Christmas to all at 5I and thanks you for a very productive year, My question involves BEP.un as I am looking to add it to my portfolio on a pullback. I already own ALA and it is at 2.5% of my portfolio. The rest of my portfolio is as close to the Balanced Portfolio as I can get. Could I have your thoughts on this acquisition.

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.
Q: Many of your suggested stocks for the income portfolio such as ABT and BEP.UN would have Graham and Malkiel shivering in their boots. My own portfolio has stuck more or less to their tenets but your suggested stocks in many cases have some of their fundamentals quite off the mark. I am worried that in a strong downturn these may not survive for a long haul such as what happened with many gold mines.
My question is, should I have faith (which is why I signed up with you) or hold a limited position in these types? I hold a well diversified portfolio with a goodly amount in GIC's. Thank you and happy holidays.

Q: With BEP.UN included in the income portfolio: Will it still be maintained within the portfolio now that President Elect Trump is tweeting about renewing coal as a viable option in energy and his pulling back on "clean air", carbon emissions etc?
Thank you
Thank you
Q: I need two names in the Utilities sector to bring my total % to 10. Already hold VNR and AQN. Thanks.
Q: Hi 5i: I want to add a renewable energy company (which can include nat gas) to a portfolio focused on dividend and dividend growers. The ideal company would of course offer some growth s well as safety. I have studied the usual suspects but I'm having trouble making a final decision. Your advice and suggestions would be appreciated.
- Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP.UN)
- RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust (REI.UN)
- AltaGas Ltd. (ALA)
- H&R Real Estate Investment Trust (HR.UN)
- WSP Global Inc. (WSP)
- Cineplex Inc. (CGX)
- Parkland Corporation (PKI)
- iShares S&P/TSX Canadian Preferred Share Index ETF (CPD)
- Sienna Senior Living Inc. (SIA)
- BMO Equal Weight Banks Index ETF (ZEB)
- iShares S&P/TSX Canadian Dividend Aristocrats Index ETF (CDZ)
Q: I manage my husband's and my TFSA's as if they are one account so we do not duplicate the stocks in the 2 accounts and can have a reasonable size of position. We have a similar weighting of ALA, REI.UN, SIA, WSP, ZEB, BEP.UN, CGX, and HR.UN and PKI, and a double weighting of CPD and CDZ. We currently have about $110K in the two accounts and $20K of that is in cash. Can you suggest what we might add to or change in the above list, considering that we prefer income paying securities with some growth prospects and want the TFSA's to act independently of our other investments as a relatively conservative growth vehicle.
Q: I have a small position in Bep.un and am considering a switch to Npi for a 2 to 3 year hold. What are your thoughts on this strategy and your analysis please? Thanx.
Q: Good day,
I have seen some fairly substantial losses with some of the listed stocks in my portfolio. I would like your advice on whether you think I should continue to hold the above or to sell , take my losses and move on. BEP.un and ZUT have just been flat, so your advice on wether to sell or hold would be great!
Thank you

Q: Can you give me per share AFFO for each of the above companies since inception? I'm concerned about share dilution in both of the above. Thanks a lot.
Q: I wish to have exposure to the clean technology sector. Do you have any preferences? Small or microcaps would be acceptable.
Q: Hi guys, a new member here. I have owned and sold both BIP.un and BEP.un as I do not understand their accounting methodology. Your report on BEP.un reflects the growing asset base, FFO, and distributions yet when I look at their profit picture they seldom show any. Quarterly reports show erratic misses to expected earnings. I like their business and distribution history as well as stated goal of future payouts but they seem to have an unpredictable annual profit. Could you comment on my reservations as your report currently gives then an A. Thanks.
- Power Corporation of Canada Subordinate Voting Shares (POW)
- Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP.UN)
- Brookfield Infrastructure Partners L.P. (BIP.UN)
Q: I'm planning to replace Power Corp in my RRSP with a combination of BIP.UN and BEP.UN. Would you recommend an equal split between both Brookfield stocks at this time, or lean more towards one vs the other?
Q: How sensitive is BEP.UN to rising interest rates?
Q: Hello,
If one would like to deploy 50k, should that be across the three Brookfield companies above or would it be better with just one (some of them) or do you have better names in the sector that prefer for a 2-3 years hold?
BIP.un is down a lot today. Any reason for it?
Would you buy now or wait until the new year?
Thanks
M

- Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP.UN)
- Canadian Utilities Limited Class A Non-Voting Shares (CU)
- Emera Incorporated (EMA)
Q: Hi 5i: I have two questions - please charge as appropriate.
(1) I have been holding CU in a dividend reinvestment account for about three years. The account focusses on stocks that provide a good dividend that is increased regularly (the usual Canadian suspects). CU has consistently underperformed the other stocks, and I'm wondering what the future holds, in particular given the changes in Alberta's approach to coal-based electricity generation.
(2) Could you give me data on dividend growth rates for EMA and BEP.UN?
Many thanks for your great advice and service.

Q: Hello 5i:
looking for "best" ideas for an income stock or stocks, to stay away from bonds. Growth is not a factor; I'm looking for real stability, both of price and dividend. I hold some ET, AD and could add to them. Have no preferreds and have thought about this space. Your take and ideas please
thanks

- Fortis Inc. (FTS)
- Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP.UN)
- Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. (AQN)
Q: Hi,
I have 1/2 positions in FTS & AQN now. I'm considering adding another 1/2 position to utilities. I could get a 1/2 position in BEP.un or add to FTS and/or AQN.
Your thoughts?
Thanks,
Gord

Q: which are the best Brookfield holdings for long term dividend yield and capital appreciation?
- Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP.UN)
- Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. (AQN)
- Northland Power Inc. (NPI)
Q: Hi, I have a number of renewable energy companies in my portfolio including the above, which I treat as a mini ETF, and they have performed wonderfully with both yield and growth. They have pulled back with the election however. Have you changed your view on any companies in this area, and if so which ones?
Q: Hi,
I've found myself having a position in both these companies. Do you see long term value in keeping both, or do you think there's too much overlap between them? I have been thinking about buying into marijuana stock now and would be rolling any money from a potential sale into it.
Thanks
