Q: You knew it would happen but I wish it had been at a premium to the pre covid price and not the current price.... I've been a longtime holder and done OK, it has paid a solid div for me over the years and I was happy with the post BIP spike last year. I sold today at the premium over the offer as I agree with you that BIP doesn't need to sweeten anything with control. Unlikely in this market and that space that a white night will come in. So my question is what should I do with the cash? I dont hold any brookfield's so buying BIP is an option or do you have a better brookfield option. I am overweight financial already so doesn't need to be in the same sector. Overall well balanced so could be anything...balanced portfolio follower slowly shifting to income.

Q: I am looking to invest in one of these two companies. as a way to play the real estate market other than through the banks. They both seem to have good management. How secure is their dividend and who would have stronger growth prospects? Any other comments greatly appreciated and do you have a preference? Thanks. Derek

Q: Hi,
I have a few questions.
1) BAM is still about 50% off its February high. Why is that, given that so many other stocks have recovered considerably more? What is your opinion of it as a long-term investment? What about BEP?
2) What is your opinion of MIC as a long-term investment? Does it at least merit a “hold” at present?
3) How likely is it that the following small-caps will survive the present crisis: PL, HTL, ENW, VFF and PILL.CN?
Thanks,
Camille

Q: Just a comment about your answer to Stephan's March 26 question regarding Genworth (MIC). You mention that Genworth's payout ratio was over 95% in 2019, but that was just because of all the special dividends they paid out. The company paid 5 (yes, 5) specials totalling almost $9.00/share between Jan 1, 2019 and Feb 29, 2020. The regular dividend is only 54 cents a quarter, or $2.16 annually, compared to 2019 net earnings of $4.92/share, so the regular dividend is very well covered, and I doubt you will be seeing any more specials for a while. Of course, the net income this year will likely be lower.

Q: Hi 5i Research Team:

I have traded Forex before and am new to stock trading. 90% of my RRSP, RESP and TFSA is in cash and I'd like to avail the current market conditions by "gradually" buying the dips.. and holding it over the long term, 5 to 10 years. I understand that no one can time the market or its bottom.

After exploring the reports and questions on your site, I have identified the enclosed 29 stocks based on following criteria:
- Current Retracements of > 75% over 52 week high & low
- Dividend Yield > 5% (in some cases, like WEED, which is a bit risky, I understand there's no dividend in the near term.. and I am simply going for the upside swing over the next 2 years... same for CRON and Air Canada)

Considering my 90% cash position and strategy to partially buy in on dips over the next few weeks, can you please advise if my stock selection is sound. In addition to my stock picks, please advise anything else that I should keep in mind.

Thanks for everything you do. Much appreciate.

Q: MIC is down about 50% which seem a bit excessive... I've held them for a long time and loved the Brookfield bump, the recent special divs. Would appreciate your thoughts before I double down. It would probably be safer to just buy one of the big banks but they haven't dropped 50%...I saw in the question archives that you ranked it "ok" as a high risk high yield option. 2 days ago.

Q: Are there any companies out there now with an 8% or higher dividend that you would suggest for a long term hold? I say 8, bc it hasn’t been overly hard to find 4-5 before this carnage. I picked up ENB already, and I’m ok if the short/med term div is cut and the price falls further. I’m really looking for stocks that will likely pay a high stable dividend into the future (based on current prices) after things return to normal. No preference on sector.

Q: Hello,

I would value your assessment of MIC's recent earnings announcement as well as your commentary on what their indication that they are going to: "to actively pursue strategic alternatives including a sale of the Company or its operating businesses as a means of unlocking value for shareholders." might mean for those of us who hold this investment?

The market's initial reaction was extremely positive but having been down the "strategic alternatives" path previously with Calidus Capital, to a disastrous conclusion, makes me personally rather circumspect. Thank you!
