Q: I noticed you recommend AQN for the utility sector. I am interested in taking a position but when I look at NPI I find it more attractive in many areas (not all). So I'd like to know why you would pick AQN over NPI? AQN is bigger so adds diversity. Dividends are pretty much the same. But on the NPI side its got better margins, EPS, positive cash flow, less dilution, much higher ROIC and ROE. Also better momentum in the short term, long term not as good. What gives AQN the edge here from your analysis? Thanks!

Q: Results look good to me. I currently hold a 4% weighting.
I have a long time frame and high risk tolerance. If the stock performs well is it ok to carry to a 7% weighting before rebalancing.
2nd question is I like to set targets like 7% above and let the target dictate rather then the emotion that may play in the moment.
3rd question is 7% to high.
My overall comfort perfect portfolio target is 4% but I know there is times to overweight. When I do overweight I prefer it be less speculative which I consider Aqn to fit.
Thanks
John

Q: Lawrence Solomon's column in the Friday edition of the Financial Post clearly implies that solar and wind energy production in Germany is dying rapidly and he warns Canada about the dangers of this type of renewable power. May I please have your assessment of these sources of energy as they relate to Canada? What implications would this have for Brookfield renewable and Algonquin?
With appreciation,
Ed

Q: I am thinking of adding these for income and noticed that none are listed in your Income Portfolio. How would rate these with respect to debt level, safety of dividend, P/E, potential growth, other metrics and management team? This is a long term hold and I can stand a fair bit of volitility.
Thanks for your excellent advice.

Q: Hello 5i,
I have a question which I don't know if it falls in your domain. But, i will try it. I have been thinking about gradually switching my utilities sector towards renewable energy. Currently I hold Algonquin and Emera which I will want to keep. { I know Emera is not on the renewals side, but i have a large cap gain and I don't want to pay the tax. There are other reasons to keep it, too}. Then, I have Enb and transcanada, which I would plan to sell if they come back a bit. I currently have about 9% in utilities where I think you recommend 15 for a retired person; but I am ok with that and am overweight technology and industrials. could you suggest a name or some names which would round out in a balanced way such a sector allocation?
thanks as always for the great service

Q: Hi Peter. To my dismay, I currently hold too many pipelines... Enbridge, Pembina, & Inter Pipeline. I wish to cut 2 of the positions and then possibly pickup Algonquin Power. I also own Fortis & Emera. Which pipeline would you suggest keeping, and your reasoning behind it. Also, do you feel 3 power utilities would then be too many and if so, which 2 would you prefer? I welcome your input. Thanks.

Q: I currently own in my RRSP the following stocks : GUD, KXS, SLF, SIS, AQN (1/2) and FTS (1/2). I have 6K$ that I would like to add to only two or three of those stocks to avoid too much trading costs.
I have a longterm timeframe (20years +) for my RRSP and am diversified across my other accounts.
I was thinking of KXS, SLF and SIS first, but utilities also look quite cheap to me these days.
What would be your selection? I'd rather not add a new position to avoid having to many...

Q: With your answer to a Q on ENB as time being on the buyers side I put a low ball bid in for some shares. Could you give me a list of 'safe' stocks (i.e. like ENB and not KWH.UN for example) with great yields that one could put stink bids on? I will assume in your answer that putting ENB over ENF(e.g.) indicates preference of the safer investment vehicle.

TIA
