Q: I am on the sidelines right now. If the market drops significantly I will buy back in. If it does drop enough for me, which 6 oil and gas stocks would you buy? Majors, micro, US, Canadian. It does not matter to me.

Following Eric Nuttall's appearance on Market Call on March 4th this year, I invested roughly equal amounts in the above six oil and gas companies on March 7th. (Coincidentally, another 5i member posted questions about the exact same six companies that day.). As of yesterday's close, the results have been a mixed bag, ranging from TOU up 52% to TVE down 25%. Overall, though, up about 6% (not counting dividends).

My investing style is generally to buy and hold quality companies for the long-term, while this oil and gas play was intended to be a bit more of speculative. What is your current opinion of these six companies? Would it be wise to sell any now?

Q: Hi, we have energy sector exposure through, CNQ,SU,TOU and ENB. There are several reasons for owning the sector through CDN companies, primarily for Dividend Tax credit in the Non Regd accounts and also their relatively lower risk profile and size. We have not invested in US Oil, and Gas/Pipeline companies, except a small holding in XLE.

CNBC guests/traders, frequently recommend the US companies listed in the question and it appears that all these stocks are doing well. ( OXY - with 20% ownership with Warren Buffet }. My question is that, in Canada, do we have Energy companies with similar product/business profiles to these US names. And, if so, for a Balanced 5i Portfolio risk profile investor, is the sector well represented with these four CDN companies ? Current Portfolio Weight: CNQ/SU/TOU: 9% ENB:6% Total-15%.

Also, is the stock a good buy at current levels, as a best positioned company for Nat Gas exposure and a no brainer with $$$ return to shareholders via quarterly special dividends of $1.50 - $2 for rest of 2022 and 2023, in addition to tight Nat Gas market with Russia situation ? Q: Thanks to your wonderful Portfolio Tracking and Analysis, I know that Energy makes up 11.07 % of my portfolio. Your statistical recommendation is that energy should be 5 % of my personalized portfolio. In order of rate of return, I have Tourmaline Oil, Enbridge, Whitecap, Suncor, Athabasca and Tamarack Valley. I am more heavily weighted in Tourmaline and Enbridge but my question is twofold. Am I really overweight in energy at this time and if so other than trimming from my two big winners, which two or three companies would you eliminate to pare back closer to 5%? The proceeds would go to buying ATD.b and Loblaws. Thanks for this wonderful service.

In reading submitted questions and your answers about SU, TOU and even CNQ over the past little while, and seeing recent activities, I was wondering if you can provide the reasoning for having SU in the balanced portfolio as opposed to the other two. TOU in particular seems to be one of your favourite energy companies, albeit with a lower dividend. Thank you!

You answered Maureen's question about TOU and TPZ as follows:

"We like both, but would consider TOU more of a growth story and TPZ more for income. We would be comfortable with a swap if that matches an investors' objectives."

How would you answer if WCP was the stock I'm considering to sell (not TPZ) in order to buy more TOU? (I realize that WCP is more of a growth story, but it's quite a bit more volatile than TOU.)

Q: I hold a 2.4% position in TOU and a 1.2% position in TPZ in a non registered account. TOU has had greater upside (65% for me) and probably still has legs over the very long term. Capital gain on TPZ is 17.25% and the dividends are solid. TPZ seems to be more an income play than a growth play. I was thinking about selling TPZ and adding to TOU for greater potential growth (5 to 10 year horizon). Currently I hold about 10% energy in Exploration and Production companies combined, but would be swapping securities rather than adding new money. Capital gains from selling TPZ would be manageable with enough capital loss offsets. Is this a good idea or should I continue to hold TPZ?

I have divided my energy holdings into E & P companies (10%) and pipelines (15% -- largely for income -- and in many respects the pipelines are closer to utilities than to oil production companies)

Q: I unfortunately bought these companies recently.I am down a huge percentage in a few short weeks.Are there any names here that I should keep?I thought I was buying high quality basket.Does energy collapse in a recession?

Q: Hi, Any comments/change about our Energy Sector Holdings strategy of 7.5-10% weighting, in light of Oil prices tumbling below US$100 today. Oil and Gas equities are taking a big hit and now trading back at the most recent lows made a few weeks ago when oil price dropped to $104. Do you think, sector could see more pressure in coming weeks/months, with fear of recession growing ? Is any action warranted ?Thank You

Q: As it appears to me we are probably headed toward some level of recession it seems likely that an economic slowdown will be negative for energy stocks such as TOU. First of all do you agree with me that a recession is possible, maybe probable, and secondly if you do do you agree the it may be timely to unload stocks such as TOU or are you of the opinion that energy prices will remain high in view of world wide need for energy, Russia etc
