Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I currently own both Canaccord and Fiera with a significant loss on CF and not much to show for FSZ during the past year. I originally invested in these because I was looking for something different from the traditional banks and wealth management and deal making in a growth environment seemed ideal. Do you still see value in these because Element is of interest and I am wondering if a switch out of one or both is in order.

My concerns with EFN are two fold. First, there has been much discussion about them buying a big part of GE's leasing business. I am assuming that this is reflected in the price. So, if that deal does not go through, would you expect a sharp price decline.

Second, they are quite exposed to interest rates changes. You have discussed this previously as it pertains to EFN and you noted that interest rate increases could negatively affect the stock. Do you make your recommendation to buy this based on your belief that rates are not going up or that they have the administrative where with all to weather that storm?

Thanks for your insight.

Q: Can I get 5i's updated view on Element Financial? Earnings were released on Wednesday and they seemed to match guidance and street expectations. I also noticed it has been doing quite well over the past few months compared to banks (although bank earnings see to be giving banks some catch up). How do you think EFN will do versus the rest of the financial sector?

Q: Comment to Shirley re: the new EFN preferred share issue: If you are interested in this new issue, I strongly suggest that you consider instead a "market purchase" of EFN.PR.C, which was issued a few months ago, and offers both a better (+0.1%) coupon rate and a higher (9bp) reset rate, while obviously having an identical credit quality and nearly the same reset date (a few months earlier). Furthermore, EFN.PR.C is about to go "ex-dividend", and so will from the start give an additional nearly 41 cent advantage over the new EFN issue. At the moment I'm writing this, EFN.PR.C is trading at $25.00.

Q: re: Element Financial EFN

Hi 5i team

I saw your answer for Rod when you replied;

"We are very comfortable with the credit quality and management of Element."

I've been watching EFN for some time. As of today it is below it's 50 day average.

I was wondering what you see moving forward considering their recent purchase of PHH?

FYI... Bruce Campbell on May 2nd ($13.13) had it as one of his top picks.

Thanks for all you do

Gord

Q: Peter et al,
You recently reported on Fiera (Fzv). I had considered it previously but forgot it when you recommended Element Finance which I bought. Considering that they are approximately the same price and Fiera pays a dividend and Element does not and Element is bigger which would you recommend or are they more or less equal?
