Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi - I held above utility and telecome stocks. With CPI hits 40 years high in Canada, BOC will likely rise 75bps in July. Do you think income stocks will be under pressure as yeild % may not be compelling anymore due to higher GIC rate. Which names would you sale first in a risk off environment?

I value your opinion.

Thanks,

Q: Hi Peter,

How would you rank the following five Brookfield companies (BIP.UN, BIPC, BAM.A., BEP.UN, and BBU.UN) over a long-term hold with respect to risk-return? Which of the five securities has the highest risk and which one do you perceive has the lowest risk?

Your comments are much appreciated.

Q: Can you recommend etfs to setup a smith maneuver account with target dividend of around 4-5%?
If you think I can get diversification from individual stocks then please go ahead to recommend that list.
Thank you for your service.

Q: BEPC/BEP.UN seems to be one of your darlings in utility/renewables sector and you have been highly recommending it for a combination of growth and income. However, it's one of the worst performing stocks in my portfolio in the past two months and I'm wondering what's wrong with it (or what's changed)? The stock is down 20% while others either just declined slightly (e.g. EQN) or even had gains (e.g. FTS). It looks like, during recent selloff, the BEPC stock is behaving more like a technology stock rather than a utility. Do you have any explanation for such a big drop? Are you still considering this company one of the best utility/renewables investments? Thanks.

Q: For many years I have had full positions in each of BEP.UN, BIP.UN, and BAM.A, and have done very well with them. For purposes of portfolio weighting, I have always treated them each as separate entities in their respective sectors ie. Utiilities, Infrastructure, and Financial Services. I am getting ready to retire and have started looking at the relative safety of my portfolio more critically. Given that these 3 are all actually part of the same parent company (BAM.A), should I be worried about being invested too heavily in one company, or is it fair to keep treating them as separate moving parts? I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.

Q: Hello 5i,

In our registered accounts we have BEP.UN, BEPC, FTS, AQN, BAM.A, BIPC, WSP. All of these stocks performed very well for 2+ years thanks to 5i. We trimmed each of the stocks to 1%-2% positions between August and October when prices were elevated with the intention of repurchasing if they dropped. With rising interest rates and inflation now it may not make sense to repurchase. Would it be viable to:
Retain one of FTS (2% position) or BEP.UN (2%) or sell both?
Sell AQN, BIPC,
Retain BAM.A and WSP, and increase each to 3% or 4% with the proceeds from the sale of the other stocks?
or Any other suggestions?

Thank you

Debbie and Jerry
