Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: One third of my non sheltered account consists of shares in ATD.B, CCL.B, CSU, and SJ. In the last month the TSX is up about 3+%. In the same period these stocks are all down (13%, 5%, 6% and 8%). The only common thread I can see is that I own them. Do you have any insights that explains the not inconsiderable under performance of the share prices of these stocks in the last month?

Q: My only tech holding at present is OTC. I would like to add a second tech stock. Which of CSU, GIB.A, KXS would you prefer as a complement at this time? Thank you, Barrie

Q: Google is said to have a very wide moat with it being a leader in search. But we all know what happens in tech -- when people reach the top there is no more room to grow or something disrupts that moat and it comes crashing down. How secure is Google and CSU and Shopify of them not being disrupted by new, nimble startups?

Q: Hi Peter and Team,

I manage my son's TFSA, and have recently almost completed a more appropriate sector allocation. In the Technology space, he has a half position in KXS. What Technology company would you recommend at this point for another half position? I was thinking of CSU but I wish it would split at least 10:1. :) How about SYZ which seems to be on a tear, or do you suggest something else at this point?

Thanks in advance for your valued advice.

Q: I have cash to add 3 new positions to my registered investment accounts. The current holdings are listed above. This is 15% of my portfolio. The other 85% is professional managed and well diversified in mutual funds. Can you recommend some Canadian stocks (that you have reports on) and ETFs that are the best purchases today that I should look into? Thanks, Matthew.

Q: As a newer subscriber to 5i, i am interested in purchasing your BE portfolio. The above names have had huge run ups and I don't know how to approach them. Which ones are buyable at these levels?
Of the ones you deem buyable, can you comment, for each, as to whether a half position or full position should be taken.
And can you rank these in terms in terms of your preferences at current levels?

Thank you for your excellent service, as always.

Q: My 6 year old's RESP CSU shares are comfortably 4 baggers. I remember being so nervous buying as chart was a straight run of succes and had recently doubled from when first started watching CSU. Thank you for the CSU research and suggestion to not be afraid to buy a stock that has gone up in price. Also, I am assume some members purchased and still hold from your first recommendation are close to or in 10 bagger territory so congrats to them.

Q: These stocks are all down 2 to 7 percent in the last month. Given the experience of DH should I be concerned with any of these and sell?

Q: Hello Peter and 5i team,
I want to add a technology name to my TFSA.
Sylogist looks interesting as it has a nice dividend and the technicals look good. I am concerned it is too small and it is vulnerable to interest rate risks.
Absolute software also has a nice dividend and has no debt. Is it ready to grow?
Do you still think Constellation is doing almost everything right?
I sold Enghouse for a nice profit at higher prices. Is it time to get back into this name?
Open text has a small dividend
Which of these companies are your favourite for stability and growth .
thank you as always for your great service.

Q: Hello,

A recent article by Mawer, discussing executive compensation states "Constellation Software is a good example of a company we like because it has chosen to align its managers. The CEO draws a $1 salary and they don’t use securities to link the alignment. Instead, all their key managers are shareholders with a genuine stake in the company’s success, earned through years of share-based compensation."

Could you recommend some other companies like CSU with top notch management and similar alignment?

Thank you
