Q: Hi 5i,
Can you please recommend some good dividend paying Canadian stocks that behave well during recessions. Can you also generalize and comment on the type of stocks that behave well and poorly during recessions.
thanks

Q: I've decided to begin building an income portfolio and have chosen the companies listed above. (Mostly from your Income Portfolio). I am retired but my pension income covers my monthly expenses. I'm looking for companies that you believe are strong enough to maintain, and hopefully increase), dividends in the long run. I understand we are in a climate of interest rate increases and income stocks could suffer as a result so I'm wondering if I should wait to begin building this portfolio. My intention is to round out the portfolio by adding companies from your balanced portfolio. My questions are:
1. Can you suggest a strategy that you consider to be wiser as I begin to develop my new portfolio?
2. Do you consider the companies I have chosen to be the best choices for a new portfolio considering all current investment metrics? Could you suggest any I have missed?
Thank-you for your continued support.

Thanks

Q: Good afternoon,

I manage 2 portfolios. One is growth (Non registered and tfsa) and the other one is income (RRSP). The income portfolio is long term investments. I have stocks in every sector at equal weight (approx. 5%) except telecommunications in which I have no investment at all. Since the telecommunication sector has been dropping because of increases interest rates would still invest in them and if so, please, recommend the which stock would you buy?

Thank you,

Paul

Q: Hi 5i,
I have a pretty balanced RRSP with these stocks and FUND. I am only up with the FUND and BEP.UN. I have about $10, 000 to add to the mix. Should I buy in to any of the losing stocks, add a new one or wait and see . Possibly ranking the "losers" might help me.
Many thanks. I enjoy the Q & A daily.
Great coverage.
Cheers
Paul

Q: Hello to all at 5i:
Is there some proxy you can suggest to gain an alternative exposure to the telecom sector other than the traditional companies in the space? I own Telus common shares and Bell preferreds and don’t want to increase those positions but am still underweight the sector. I’m really not interested in owning “more of the same” in Canada (RCI.B) and really don’t want Vodofone, AT&T, Verizon or a U.S. telecom ETF (which I think will be largely the latter two companies?). All I really see are slowing revenues and slowing dividends and lackluster share performance. I’m having trouble identifying opportunities that fit my usual investment thesis in this sector. Is there another way to play it that I’m not seeing?
Thanks for your thoughts,

Q: If my broker went on national tv and picked 3 index stocks I would immediately move my money.
I can pay 0.03 and get the same results.
Most of the guests on BNN are scared to stray from index.
Your group is not.

Q: I am thinking of replacing positions in Shaw and Rogers with BCE and Chartwell. My only real reason for doing so would be if there was no downside with respect to balance sheets and current valuation and potential upside on share price appreciation and dividend growth over the long term. Would you make the change if those were the only criteria (i.e. without respect to Chartwell's smaller size, different sector etc.)?

Always look forward to your insight, thanks.
