Q: Greetings,

I need to add an industrial and a consumer staple/discretionary to my overall well balanced US portfolio. After reviewing a number of options, my top in each category are GD and HBI. I am looking for some growth and a dividend as I am nearing retirement. I am betting that GD will continue its strong growth and HBI will turn things around. Your thoughts and do you have a better recommendation in each sector?

Thanks

Q: Please provide comments on Hanesbrands. Share price has pulled back in the last few days. I believe due to lower Q4 and FY expectations. Is the recent price drop over done. Currently HBI represents 3% of my portfolio. Should I consider this a buying opportunity or just hold. Are there other Consumer Products I should consider?

I like the new features of the website. At first I found the larger font size and line spacing difficult. Changing the zoom setting (from 100% to 80%) for the browser tab has improved it for me.

Thank you

Stephen

Q: What are your thoughts on HBI? I came across this idea from a Morningstar article focusing on undervalued US stocks. I don't have any defensive consumer stocks in my portfolio and thought it might be a good addition.

The company apparently has a strong brand and market position in underwear and other apparel and is trading at lower multiples than Gildan (HBI 12x forward p/e). EPS and dividend growth have been strong over the past 3 years but a recent guidance decrease has sent the stock down.

They recently acquired Champion brand in Europe and Pacific brands of Australia.

One potential risk is the increasing leverage of the balance sheet by issuance of new debt and recent large share buyback. An intention change the capital structure to boost ROE and EPS seems to be taking place. E
