Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Good morning and happy Friday.

Here is a fun little exercise, if you had 1 million $ concentrated portfolio of 5-10 stocks and had a goal of an average 6%-8% return annually via combination of dividend and capital appreciation of holdings what stocks would you own? Canadian holding, and combo Canadian/U.S.A holdings. So 2x portfolio examples.

I realize this is just for fun and not financial advice. Thank you for the years of great service.

Q: Hello Peter,

I think the market either goes down some or takes a breather for a couple of weeks as it digests the probability of a higher peak interest rate. I would like your opinion please.
In that context I am thinking of taking some profit on some of my long term positions that have rebounded with the intention of raising cash and legging in again as the rebound happens. At the same time I like them a lot and do not want to keep chasing after I sell. Just want to manage my risk without options.
In the semiconductor space I have a full position in NVDA and QCOM and half positions in ON and AMD. How would you suggest I trim, or should I go along for a bumpy ride?
As regards CRWD, I am in a conundrum. I like the space and it is my only holding there. It is also expensive. How would you suggest I manage the risk from here- I do not trade options.
Looking forward to your suggestions.
Regards
Rajiv

Q: It's time to add to my TFSA. I own ADBE, GOOG, AAPL, NVDA, PYPL, QCOM, CRM and TOL in this account, where longterm growth is the investment objective. Should any of these be switched? Please recommend replacements if so and ignore sector/market cap considerations. I wish to add to either NVDA or PYPL, which of these should I add to? Deduct as many credits as required. Thanks, and wishing you all the best for 2023.

Q: Hello 5i!
At this point in the cycle can you please rate the following as buy, sell or hold. I know you sometimes say in a different kind of market high growth can do well. Can you please comment on whether one should decrease technology holdings in general or just wait for tech to shine again one day. Thank you!

Q: Hi 5i Team - I hold the above stocks in three small U.S. accounts. I plan to keep NVDA, QCOM, AMZN, GOOG. My holdings in the other six are minimal due to the general sell-off over the past year: CRWD, UCTT, U, APPS, ROKU, UPST. I would like to combine these 6 into two, three at the maximum. Could you suggest which two or three should be kept. Or might it be best to sell all six and start over with a couple of different ones. My investment focus is growth with a three year timeline. Since it's the end of the week the answer can wait until sometime next week.
Thanks.

Q: QCOM has been dropped a fair amount more in recent weeks, perhaps due to news about a US policy about chips to China. While big on chip manufacturing, does QCOM in fact have more (eg IP assets) that would make the large drop because of the US policy announcement overdone?

In any event, does QCOM have good potential for a recovery in the next short while? Otherwise, I might take a tax loss and add to, say, MSFT; any comment about that move?

thank you for your excellent service

Q: I own shares in these 3 companies and am thinking of adding to one or all of them. Weightings are all still relatively modest. What do think of these stocks, is this a good time to add, and would you suggest adding to one, two or all. If not all, in which one or two would you prefer? With thanks, Don
