Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi guys, I own the following with the respective total portfolio weightings. My TFSA is all CDN and RRSP is a mix of USD/CDN. When I rebalance, should I try and rebalance with respect to % of TFSA and % of RRSP or rebalance each holding as a percent of overall portfolio? If the latter, I would consolidate some of the holdings in my TFSA to bump up the individual weightings. Are there any obvious adjustments that I should make? I’m heavy on AAPL but have sold so much of it over the years I’m very tempted to let the remaining shares ride.
Please deduct as many credits as you see fit and many thanks for the excellent service you provide. The Q/A is invaluable as are the periodic market summaries. You’ve pulled me away from the panic button many, many times.

Q: I have been watching AYX, NVDA and ROKU for a while, but haven't bought any of them yet. If you were to buy them today, please rank 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the order that you would buy them.

According to RBC, ROKU has 118.1 M shares, and of that only 64.235 M are floating shares. The short interest is about 14% of the float. On Friday Feb 14th, the volume of shares traded was 63.1 M. That's 98.2% of the floating shares were traded. Can you help me understand what this information can tell you? On the surface every floating share was traded, but really some shares were traded multiple times throughout the day. When the volume of trading is this high compared to the float, what does this trading pattern indicate?

Q: Due to fortunate timing following some great advice (thanks 5I!!) combined with the recent market surge, we find ourselves overweight in Tech. With relatively equal weighting, which of these 7 companies (if any) would you consider selling? In what order?

Q: Hi, I am looking to deploy some US dollars I have in cash. My thinking is to focus on US tech - in particular the software, internet and semiconductor industries. Could you recommend names in each industry you feel would be a good choice, considering solid companies with growth prospects that could be held longer term?
Thank you for all your hard work!

Q: Hi, can you explain the connection between the Coronavirus and the markets? I’m watching stocks like Photon, Nvidia, and Xpel get hammered (xpel the worst at 12% - I’ve already taken profits so I’m only on house money there at least). I just don’t really understand why people getting sick has such an effect. I’m not trying to be cold, just trying to understand and learn if there’s a way to hedge against it.

Thanks

Q: Seasons Greetings 5i!!
About a year ago a member asked you for a sample "growthy" USA portfolio.
You responded with the above listed stocks which have returned about 35% YTD.
Would you make any changes today twelve months after you first recommended it?
Thanks for all you do for all your help! It is has honestly been life changing for us and truly appreciated!!
Regards
Dave

Q: Goodafternoon 5i'
I am not concerned about the sector but wondered how you might rank these companies as buys currently and for the long term: NVDA, CRM, TEAM, MSFT, INTC, QCOM, GILD, DXCM
Thanks for the great work

Q: Hello 5i
I own all of the companies noted. I'm wondering if there is excessive overlap here and if I should sell one or more in an effort to reduce overall holdings?
Thanks
Dave

Q: I've been active in DIY investing for 7 years. Have chosen only CDN listed stocks and, with 5i's help, have been reasonably satisfied with returns over that period. However, despite my stubborn resistance to the US, I cannot continue to ignore that market. So I have 5 forced-choice questions for you. I will invest in 5 of the 11 listed. I'd like your opinion about which one in each group to invest. These are LT holds (5+ years). I'm not expecting a detailed rationale, but would appreciate knowing if your preferences are strong. Or not. Thanks!

Q: Good morning team 5i
All of these stocks are down. Setting aside sector weights and realizing I am asking for a "crystal ball" answer, which of the above do you think has the quickest (6 months to a year) upside? I have a bit of cash for this specific exercise. Much thanks as usual for all you do!

Q: Hi !
Being overweight in tech (holding those above roughly in equal amounts), could you indicate, in order, which one you would let go to create some cash ? I also hold the following ETFs: igv, vgt, iusg which may create some duplication.
Thanks as always,
Jacques, Īle-des-Soeurs

Q: Hi Peter and Ryan,
Lately I contributed some cash into my RRSP. I owns many Canadian companies as you have in your demo portfolios. I also have US shares of QCOM, Google, Twitter, AYX, SQ. I am thinking of adding 2-3 of US stocks in my list above. What will you recommend? Or do you have other stocks that have good growth potentials in the long term?
Thank you,
Yiwen

Q: Taking a bit of a blood bath on Canntrust (-68%) and NVDA (-24%) watching Aurora Cannabis plummet and have some of that too. Get out now, buy or hold? Recommendations for alternatives with growth potential appreciated depending on your thoughts on the above 3.
Thanks.
