Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: If one believed that now was a good time to start picking away at beaten up stocks, how much should the fear of tax loss selling in the next 6 weeks weigh on the decision of whether or not to buy now or wait? Probably not a great way to invest pitting the fear of short term loss against fomo. Could you also highlight 10 or 12 Cdn stocks that in your opinion are the most vulnerable to taking a big tax loss selling hit this year. Thank you.

Q: Tax Loss selling time is just around the corner and I would like to take advantage of losses I have in above companies. I have some gains this year and I paid taxes on gains for the last 3 years as well.
Would you sell one position only and which one would you suggest. I would like to buy back at the appropriate time as well.
I would appreciate if you could prepare us for this event of tax loss selling and refresh our memories.
Thank you!
Albert

Q: Thx for the heads up on CLS in early May. Looking at insider buying by CEOs and CFOs do you see anything of interest at present? Anything of interest from the growth porfolio with significant insider buying?

Thx

Q: Good day ,
I realize this name has been asked about numerous times including myself and most likely feel like I’m beating a dead horse here.. but this is the reason we as retail investors look to to your service for help .. no beating around the bush here as we know it’s a “hold “ for now .. are u confident in 2 -3 years time we investors who have “held “ this name will be rewarded for holding or averaging down as we are investing in this company and not trading this name .. are u confident in the management and the business model here for a long term story ?
Thank u
Mark

Q: Morning 5i,

Here's my burning question which I'll frame as a hypothetical;

Say a fella had 2500 shares of CTS in a TFSA with a BV of ~ $20K and a current MV of ~ $6.6K (hypothetically speaking ...). Taking into account the prospects for CTS over the next 3 years (the fella can afford to wait it out but doesn't like seeing all the red every time he looks at his TFSA account) would it be advisable to liquidate the CTS and invest the ~6.6K elsewhere and, if so and importantly, what 'elsewhere' would you invest in to get a return on the money (cap gain and/or dividends) that will outpace what it's likely to do if left in CTS, all without unduly risking compounding the problem?

You know, hypothetically speaking ...

Thanks 5i.

Peter

Q: Hi, these are my stocks that are currently down, and would like to do some weeding, and tax loss planning.
I would like to sell one outright, sell three to half position, and maybe keep the remaining position.
The idea is to acquire cash to slowly add to my more stable holdings like ( BN:SLF: CSU etc.).
Thanks, and appreciate your feedback and opinions.

Q: A number of the companies in your growth Portfolio have seen significant recent pullbacks. Specifically, DND, NVEI, TSU, TVE, TIXT and CTS. Would you consider these companies as Buy/Hold/Sell at current pricing?

Thanks
Tim

Q: Trying to reduce my number of stock holdings. Have identified these 11 as small positions that can be eliminated. Intending to use the cash to add to stronger holdings. I try not to think of a stock as a "hold". There are lots of high quality names you can invest in that look better than a "hold". If you were doing a portfolio clean up, and held these as roughly 1% positions, are there any that you would be reluctant to sell?

Q: If you didn't have any shares in these companies wouldn't this be a good time to buy and slowly add over the next couple years. My thinking is CTS just has to go back to three dollars and your up 20%. They are buying back shares, dividend, huge ebitda etc. Board makes a few tweeks and sentiment and direction changes. I understand if you have a position to hold. Do you generally agree with the above.

Q: Argh!! Not a good day on the quarterly earnings front for some of these names in my portfolio. After recent developments, would you still consider these names still a add/hold/sell?

I know hindsight is 20/20 but sometimes I wonder why I didn't put more of my capital into a stock like Constellation, which is just best in class and steady, rather than into these other names. I currently have a large position in CSU and others which largely offset these losses, but waking up to these drops of 20-30% are getting really irritating, but I understand this is the how it is. No pain, no gain! Thank you!

Q: Hi 5i Team - I have been reading your responses to questions on CTS Technologies and am still not sure of whether this is a stock to hold on to. You mentioned in one response that the net debt is $320 but said that it has a healthy balance sheet in another response. Is the debt a concern? Small revenue growth is expected over the next few years but strong earnings growth is expected after this year. This appears to be a contradiction but perhaps not - could you please explain. Maybe I have not read this correctly. Also it was made clear that a long time frame is needed. Would this be three to five years - or more. Thanks.

Q: Hello 5i Team,

I'm looking to sell the following 12 stocks in my cash account to crystallize some losses in anticipation of better buying opportunities in the fall: BNTX, CAE, CHTR, CIEN, CJT, CTS, DIS, FNF, GNRC, HAS, TEAM, and YETI.

For each of these stocks, could you please indicate: HOLD; SELL; or SELL + RE-BUY (with suggested proxy).

Feel free to deduct as many credits as you see fit.

Thanks in advance for your always helpful advice!
