Q: I currently hold the following technology equities in my portfolio: AAPL, TEAM, CSU, and LSPD. I'm considering selling LSDP (up 14%) and purchasing either SHOP or DSG. I would like a bit less volatility and more consistent growth. Does this seem reasonable and which would you choose or do you have another idea?
Thank you for your advice.

Q: Hi guys, I own the following with the respective total portfolio weightings. My TFSA is all CDN and RRSP is a mix of USD/CDN. When I rebalance, should I try and rebalance with respect to % of TFSA and % of RRSP or rebalance each holding as a percent of overall portfolio? If the latter, I would consolidate some of the holdings in my TFSA to bump up the individual weightings. Are there any obvious adjustments that I should make? I’m heavy on AAPL but have sold so much of it over the years I’m very tempted to let the remaining shares ride.
Please deduct as many credits as you see fit and many thanks for the excellent service you provide. The Q/A is invaluable as are the periodic market summaries. You’ve pulled me away from the panic button many, many times.

Q: Hi,
Having held some cash aside, waiting for a pullback - I am now wondering which companies I should focus on purchasing first during the downturn? Obviously I am looking for those that are good, solid companies with growth potential. Dividends is nice feature, but not a requirement if the future prospects for the company are strong and debt is low or non existent. I do not currently have any REITs and only AQN in utilities, ENB in energy as I lean towards growth more than income and usually overweight in stronger sectors and industries. Please provide some suggestions, US or Cdn, that have caught your interest recently, as I always value your suggestions.
Thank you,
Dawn

Q: I am interested in your view on the best strategy for selling stocks to raise cash in a non-registered account. I am looking to sell 1% of my total portfolio, and my thinking is to either A) take this out of one or both of two stocks that are the largest (each about 5%) weighting in my portfolio or B) sell my least favourite, lowest weighting, stocks (energy producers) with 3 stocks comprising 3% total weighting.

With option A) I could pare one of my largest holdings back to 4% or both of them back to 4.5%. One stock is ENB, in which I have a 30% gain and the other stock is AAPL, in which I have a 350% gain. ENB pays a 6% dividend, which I am reluctant to lose, and which benefits from the dividend tax credit. AAPL pays a 1% dividend, which is fully taxable and easier to give up, but I will have to pay a sizeable capital gains tax. I have no stocks with losses that I can sell to offset the gains. You have always advocated hanging onto winners, and both of these stocks are "winners" in a way, one for income and the other for growth.

With option B) I could sell half my energy producer holdings. I bought the energy stocks as a "lottery ticket," expecting at least a double if and when energy prices rebound. I hold CVE (up 25%), ERF (breakeven) and WCP (up 32%). They are roughly equal weight, so I could achieve my goal of selling 1% of my portfolio by selling just one of these three stocks.

Which stock(s) would you recommend I sell and why?

Q: I started following the 5i balanced equity portfolio in my LIRA a couple of months ago, but to change it up I am thinking about taking a 5% portfolio position in one of these companies. I have a 25-year investment time horizon for my LIRA. If I wanted to replace one of the 5i balanced equity portfolio funds with one of SHOP, APPL, TSLA, GOOG or AMZN, what would you recommend (both the one I would sell and the one to replace it with)?

Q: Hello,

I'm getting a little nervous about the valuation of Square lately and considering Micron or Apple. They are both much cheaper than Square, but how do you see the trade off in terms of growth potential over the next 5 years. Would you stick with SQ, considering a reasonably high-risk tolerance, or make a change? Thank you.

Q: A first question on this Discovery, which has a fairly stale chart over five years. However, they have some significantly subscribed to channels including Discovery, Animal Planet, TLC and HGTV. With Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Disney vying for space and content, how would you rate DISCK as a takeover target? With a $15B market cap, I know APPL and AMZN could afford it, what about the others?

Thanks.

Q: In my opinion the U.S. China trade relations will soon improve. One reason being Trump does not want to go into an election without the economy firing on all cylinders. Can you suggest a stock that will benefit from the easing of trade barriers.

Q: According to Portfolio Analytics (and certainly by any other measure as well!) I am over allocated to Apple. I really think their products remain sound (look at new AirPods Pro) and they seem to keep a considerable amount of cash on hand. I first bought at the time of the Brexit vote in 2016 at just under $93 USD per share and have been handsomely rewarded to date. Am I foolish not to rebalance some of the gains? I am thinking that if they have a big miss such as a larger hardware issue they have a lot of means to fix it and move on. Are they well positioned for 5G? Any thoughts appreciated.

thanks,
Marilou
