Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q:
This question is prompted by concern I felt upon seeing portfolio consists almost entirely of growth companies, few dividend payers, and no bond holdings. After reading the notes, articles and opinions of several financial analysts and investment gurus, I gather:
— that “value investing” has not worked for the past decade; and
— that now however is the time for investors to adopt a Value-centric approach.
Do you agree with this sentiment? If yes, does 5i have screens (or links to them) of US-listed companies whose share prices have declined more than fundamentals justify AND whose prospects for share price appreciation look good going forward ?

Additionally, IF, and *ONLY IF*, you believe “value’s time has come” do you have a US-listed value-oriented ETF that you care to recommend? I reviewed these two ETFs: ILCV and VLUE. Do you like either one? If yes, do you prefer one over the other? Or do you have other suggestions? Thanks! :ao: sab

Q: Can I have your general thoughts on ATKR? Also, more specifically can you comment on 2 things 1) debt and2) timing. I have been watching it and can imagine some tax loss selling impact the share price. However the turn yesterday was interesting and I am tempted to take a half position now in case interest outpaces any tax loss selling and maybe add to it in late December or early January. Does this seem like a reasonable course of action? Please and Thank-you.

Q: A few months ago I became interested in ATKR after some favourable comments in the Q & A's. The financial matrices seem fairly positive and I took a position. Ouch. It began to decline and in 2 months the share price is now down about 33%. The weakness began well before the wreck of the last couple of weeks, and it did not participate in the recent small cap run or even pick up on the couple of days when there was a bounce in the markets. Out of all that, what is your current view on ATKR? If it were you, would you sell, given (this is a taxable account) or would you hold looking for a rebound (hope is not a strong investment strategy), and why? Many thanks for your excellent service.

Q: Hi 5i,

Multiple related questions:

#1 - I believe the purchase of Encore Wire (WIRE) by Prysmian @ $290/share should be confirmed in the next few days. Do you know anything further about this?

#2 - Would you recommend selling WIRE at this time @ +/- $282/share or waiting for the deal to go through at $290/share? At what point after the sale are shareholders paid?

#3 - In looking for a like-minded company (electrification transition, green renewables etc.) I came across Atkore Inc. (ATKR). What are your current thoughts on this company for a 3 to 5 year hold?

#4 - Between MYRG, STRL, ATKR and PWR how would you rank them out of 10 (10 being the best) and in what order for a 3 to 5 year hold?

Thank you for your wisdom and guidance!

Q: I have funds to put towards an aggressive attempt at obtaining an average 20% annual return over the next 3-5 years (own CSU, NVDA, GOOG, BN and few others with such potential). Not looking for a detailed analyses or commentary, but do any of these choices seem to be unlikely candidates for the desired outcome - ADBE, INTU, WIRE/ATK combo, HEI/TDG combo, ZTS, BX, LVMUY?
