Q: We have a diversified RIF and are now in our 70s . We have 6 ETFs and have $20,000.00 invested in VE. We have equities invested across all sectors some sectors a higher percentage than others. Do you feel it is necessary to have monies invested in Europe when we could obtain better income investing in possibly Bonds or preferred shares. Safety and Income are important now to us . Any recommendations.

Q: Given the uncertainty in short term market direction,I have 50% of my TFSA in cash.I believe Canadian interest rates are not going to rise.I am considering the choices listed above, unless you can suggest others.I also have some cash in my US$ RRSP and am considering the Vanguard fund for this cash.US rates may climb further, but not much.Perhaps you could rate these according to risk.
Thank you.

Q:
good Morning 5i,
Jack Bogel has recently noted the troubles in France regarding "taxing the rich" , the Brexit confusion, and an unstable US government as reasons to go more towards bonds in the immediate future. He has always suggested a high level of bond ownership. And he is getting older and possibly more conservative. Was wondering about your take on that pronouncement and possible US bond etf suggestions. I have done fairly well with FLOT over the past while. But, you seem to think that the situation is changing and it may be time to move into somethng else.

Q: These ETFs are described on their websites as active floating rates bonds with very similar timeframes. HFR has more US focus thought. However, their yields are drastically different; FLOT~5% and HFR~2.3%. Can you explain why the big difference. Which would you recommend?

Q: I've been comparing these two funds and while they appear to be essentially taking the same approach. HFR has Canadian & US holdings and FLOT has exclusively US holdings. Yet their is a substantial difference in their yields. But FLOT yield is 4.3% and HFR 2.3%. I don't get it.
Yield is nice to have but I'm more concerned with capital preservation through the end of this business cycle. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Q: Good morning,
In your response to Marilyn on Friday you replied that you "have no concens seeing it (CPD) as part of an income allocation" and "one needs to decide how it fits in"
My recent experience is that any so-called fixed income that I purchase loses money even including distributions. My current cash allocation is therefor 20% earning nothing, with another 20% in CBO, CPD, XBB, XHY, and a few preferred issues. I can look for a DIS account but could you expand on "how it fits in" and perhaps suggest the ETFs we should currently be using in this environment and a possible allocation range for each. Thank you for the ongoing excellent service in a difficult environment.

Q: A month ago I sold both these bond etf’s to capture the tax loss. I’m now looking to rebuy/reinvest these funds. As part of my fixed income allocation I’m wondering if I should repurchase the same or might you have other suggestions in a rising rate environment?
Thank you

Q: I'm retired and have no fixed income in my portfolio.
I would like to switch about 15% of my investments into fixed income. I have read all the questions regarding MFT but am looking for a few more ideas with as much return as is prudently possible.
I spend time in the U.S., so an idea or two there would be a great help, as well.
Thank you, in advance.

Q: What's your view of continuing to hold VIG in the near to medium term? I'm thinking there could be an increasing amount of pressure on it and its constituent companies as higher bond yields are actually materializing and are making VIG's 1.84% dividend look anemic by comparison. Is there an alternative holding/strategy you might recommend in its place during this period?

Q: Can you please provide a few bond ETF's that may react positively in a market correction to soften the blow to a portfolio? Thanks
