Q: Do Canadian ETFs that track US tech firms underperform? I was looking at these and a few others on the G&W and the Canadian ETFs with the exception of HTA and HTA.B (up 35%ytd) seem to have significantly lower returns. And I think HTA uses covered calls.

XLK is up 32% ytd, IYW 35%, IGN 31%. The most popular Canadian ETFS seem to be ZQQ(ZQN) 26%, XQQ and HQQ 26% and TEC 25%. Some of this is due to currency moves, but the hedging costs of the hedged ETFs surely aren't that large. Is it better to just buy XLK or are HTA/HTA.B a better alternative?

Q: I work in tech and for that reason I had told myself no need to add further exposure to tech by holding tech stocks. Now I kind of regret that strategy. I wonder what percentage of exposure to tech In my portfolio is sensible? Is it too late to enter? Do you think tech stocks are in a bubble? Can you suggest some names (ETFs/stocks) in canada and US that would be good choices if we decided to add some exposure to tech?

Q: I have a well diversified Canadian Stock portfolio. However, that being said, there are no Consumer, Technology or Health Care stocks in that portfolio.

Do you think that low cost, diversified, market weighted US ETFs XLP, XLY, XLK, XLV is a smart way to cover the sectors lacking in my portfolio.

Many Thanks.

Q: Hi group I believe that Tech + health + gold will be the leaders when we come out of recession. Can you give me a list of 2 ETFs for each sector along with 2 individual stocks you like for Canada + USA. Am also interested you take on my sectors that will lead the recovery and should I start picking away or wait ??? (I believe the market are vastly overbought and does not factor in the economic reality that the virus is going to do to the market. Please deduct credits at your discretion.

Q: Hello 5i!

Appreciate all the great work.
I am looking for a canadian as well as US listed tech ETF. And semi-conductor fund to be held in my RRSP. Diversification and of course hoping for long term growth.
Currently XIT (TFSA). Using the room in RRSP for US listed dividend stocks/ETF's. Or whichever is the most tax and growth efficient.

I'm wondering what your top picks are in that sector and why? One concern of mine is some have a much higher mer. Is that worth the performance in the long run?

Or better bang for your buck on keeping fees low as usual and the most diverse fund. Company and cap wise. Hence holding a primarily large cap and semi conductor. Or just 1 solid all around.

If I'm missing a far better pick please enlighten me.

Thank you for putting together such a great site and program. Info is fantastic.

Q: I realize that in a recovery as you’ve noted, individual stocks will do better than ETF’s. If I’m looking for growth over a three to five year time frame would you suggest buying both SMU and XLK Or a list of individual stocks that could include MSFT JPM V WMT INTC ? I suppose a combination of the two options is also possible. This is for US exposure and it’ll be in my TFSA account which is presently sitting in cash. I believe you’d also suggest buying back in gradually. Thoughts. Thnks

Q: Good morning,
I currently hold BABA.US in my RRSP and was considering a switch to AMZN.US. In an effort to further reduce risk while maintaining a tech component in my overall diversified portfolio, I'm now looking at selling my current BABA.US holdings and buying either QQQ.US or XLK.US which both hold some AMZN.US.
What are your thoughts on this potential move and of the two ETFs mentioned, which would you recommend and why?
I thank you and look forward to your response.

Q: Looking at the US market for a 2-3 year horizon. Like TSG, SMSEY, XLK, NVDA and TEAM do you see any problem with taking full positions now and what 2-3 additions would you make and or remove.

Thank-you as always for your insight.

Q: For the technology portion of one of my portfolios I've held 75% XLK and 25% FDN. Since XLK will be reconfigured this month, what ETFs do you think would best represent the technology sector moving forward? Also what about timing with the changes being made to XLK?

Thanks!
