Q: I own a small percentage of ECN (no gain/loss) and EFN (at a loss currently). I'm thinking of consolidating my stocks by selling one or both. I'm wondering whether I should sell both ECN and EFN and consolidate in a stock such as GSY, or whether I should sell the EFN and consolidate in ECN. What do you think? Do you have any suggestions or recommendations in other similar stocks that I could consolidate in? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Q: Hello 5I, Am I right to assume that min rate-resets less vulnerable to future rate increases as regular ones? I am looking at ENC.pr.c, pays min 6.25 divs. redeemable at $25.00, trading at $23.45, new issue was underwritten by TD-BMO and RBC how safe is it, can they stop paying this div? I would appreciate your advise, perhaps suggesting a couple others.
Many thanks, J.A.P., Burlington

Q: I need to add to the financial sector of my portfolio. I own 3 stocks in this sector, a full position in BNS and would like to add to SLF or ECN. I was going to add to ECN but began to wonder if ECN would be negatively impacted by rising interest rates especially with their debt being over 2x or would they simply pass on their increased expenses to their customer? Not sure how much competition they have in that space. Thank you in advance for your expertise.

Q: My financials consist of the above two stocks and a full position in GSY. AIF has been week and I am down 9%. AIF is 1.85% of my portfolio. ECN has done well and is up 12%. It makes up 2.25% of my portfolio. Which would you top up to a full position at this time. I also have a managed account that holds the usual canadian banks so I have narrowed my choice to the above two.

Q: Good morning Peter et al. I have $68K in a rrsp and $80K In a cash account to invest. A full position in each account is $20K. Time frame is 3 to 5 years. I have full positions in other accounts of shop, pbh, gud, nfi, sis, and toy. My thought was to add Boyd, CAE in each. I also have 1/2 position in Photon. Can you give me some direction on what else to add other than going bluechip defensive.
Thanks in advance david

Q: I am very impressed with your ability to limit your balanced portfolio to 25 stocks. Currently I hold the above six stocks in the financial sector whereas you hold three. The only one with large imbedded gains is REF.UN which I have held for over twenty years. one third of our total portfolio follows your balanced portfolio. The other 2/3s is managed for us and includes a large allocation to canadian banks. I am willing to sacrifice some stability for more growth. Would you consolidate any of the above stocks to simplify the portfolio? Below is my current allocations. My bias is to keeping REF, GSY and ECN.
2.23% aif
3.16% ref
2.36% ecn
1.90% fsz
2.54% gsy
1.86% slf

Q: Question related to the new preferred share offering: ECN.PR.C which yields at the very minimum 6.25%.

Deal was sold out and as soon as it started trading the share price dropped below the $25 issue price and is now below $24.

Why would anyone buy the issue at $25 and sell it right after. Any ideas?

Also, would you recommend adding to it below $24. I have 700 shares which represents around 1.2% of my portfolio.

Thank You.

Q: Just a comment and clarification on Stevens Qs: I am surprised the 6.25% minimum ECN preferred share financing is still open as it's only $100M. Does this reflect badly on the issue? I thought a 6.25% guaranteed minimum was a good buy even if rates eventually rise.
Thanks.

--- The issue was closed the same day at TD and the issue has been completed yesterday as per mail from TDW.

Issue Completed - ECN Capital Corp. 6.25% Cumulative Rate Reset Preferred Shares, Series C

I also see that they have taken the money from my account for shares allocated.
