Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Argh!! Not a good day on the quarterly earnings front for some of these names in my portfolio. After recent developments, would you still consider these names still a add/hold/sell?

I know hindsight is 20/20 but sometimes I wonder why I didn't put more of my capital into a stock like Constellation, which is just best in class and steady, rather than into these other names. I currently have a large position in CSU and others which largely offset these losses, but waking up to these drops of 20-30% are getting really irritating, but I understand this is the how it is. No pain, no gain! Thank you!

Q: These 9 companies are the holdings in a growth oriented Canadian TFSA. The intent was for them to be long-term holds. However, NVEI, ILLM and LSPD are all down over 50% and some so rejigging is being considered.

Would you consider any of them to be a SELL?

Of the 9, which 2 would you be least inclined to keep in the portfolio and why? Please suggest potential replacements.

Please rate (1-10) the remaining 7 for additional money today.

Thank you,

Peter.

Q: How would you rank these current and 2-3year potential. All except TOI look to be massively discounted versus previous performance. Possible multi baggers?

Q: This is a portfolio management question. I help manage my retired sister’s stock portfolio; it consists of 36 generally high-quality companies, with focus on Canadian dividend-paying stocks (as she benefits from favourable taxation of eligible dividends); the portfolio has done very well over the years (thanks to advice from 5i); the philosophy is generally "buy-and-hold" with minimal turnover. Portfolio breakdown is roughly 60% Canadian (many with U.S./international focus, e.g., TD, RBI, TRI, etc.), 30% US, 10% foreign. All 36 stock holdings are 2.0-5.0% positions (median weight, 2.7%), except Aritzia (ATZ), which due to declining share price is down to only 1.4% weight. My question is: what to do with a stock like Aritzia? the portfolio management style would be to add to this position, given that it is fallen a lot, and the expectation is that it will recover, and potentially do quite well, in the long-term. On the other hand, there is a risk of continuing bad performance, and one doesn’t want to add good money after bad (the ATZ cost base is already near the median for the 36-stock portfolio). So, from a portfolio management perspective, how would you handle such a stock that has fallen quite a bit below the 2.0-5.0% target weighting of the rest of the portfolio. (Further, it doesn’t pay a dividend, either.)

Q: In an earlier question asking whether it would be wise to buy atz now, you said you would hold if you owned it or wait till the dust settles, if you don’t. I have been thinking about taking a tax loss on it. The idea was to buy it in my rif, wait one month and then sell it in my non registered account. A lot can happen in a month, though, and i hesitate, wondering whether i should buy a place holder. I am a bit leery of Canada Goose, though. Perhaps i don’t even have to be in that sector for a place holder. Wondering about your thoughts on this?
Thanks as always

Q: Hello 5i
First, thank you for your excellent service and guidance! I am retired, looking for income and growth. Following are my questions.

1) What do you think of VCNS? Could you suggest an alternative. I presently have a half position in VCNS.
2) At this time would you still recommend a 4.5% position in ATZ?
3)I am down about 30% with MMM. Is there a better place for these funds?
4) I am down 11% with CLF. What has to happen( with interest etc.) to recoup this loss?

Thank you, Bill

Q: Hello,

Looking to add to my current positions in these companies (registered account, 10+ year time frame). If you could please rank them in order of potential upside that would be great (and if there is a company you would stay away from, please indicate).

Thanks!

Q: This is a comment rather than a question. Like other 5i investors holding this stock, I am disappointed with the recent price decline. While no one likes stock price depreciation (except shorts of course), I have to credit 5i with at least having the decency to admit that it was wrong. In a world where blame is often deflected or excused for some reason or other, I find it refreshing that 5i has the integrity to admit a mistake. Let's hope there are better days ahead for this company. I suspect there will be.
