Q: Hi there, I am looking to pick up a few positions. I am underweight in consumer cyclical, real estate, financials, energy, and US. I have no holding outside N.America. My investment profile is Balanced to growth-oriented.
I currently own the following in those categories:
ATZ, BRP, CELPH. COST, LULU, MG, PLC, TSU, X, RY, SLF
What stocks would you buy today?

As a side note, Is there a publication or investment service you would recommend, for US and international holdings?
Thanks for your advice.

Q: It seems to me that going forward inflation worries are real. Assuming my thesis is correct, I have read that one way for investors to protect their portfolios is to buy companies with "pricing power". What exactly is pricing power and can you give me a list of Canadian and American companies that currently have the most pricing power.

Q: If inflation is going to be a concern, do you have 5 company suggestions in the US and Canada that would have pricing and so earnings power? Thank you

Q: These companies appeal to me for various reasons, some of which I currently own. For new money in an unregistered account, in your opinion which two would have the most pop in the near future and likely for a 3 yr hold? Thanks.

Q: Hi 5i,
So grateful for your very quick and frank intervention in response to my request for counselling this morning as I grappled with the irrational urge to sell ATZ 'because it is up'. I've printed your answer and it's pinned to my wall for reference when that urge strikes again regarding another name sometime in the future, as it inevitably will.
And with regard to finding another name where that urge might arise, can you identify 2 or 3 (regardless of sector) that check some or all of the boxes you highlighted with ATZ - strong momentum in sales and earnings (not just sales, I notice), broker upgrades, positive surprises on earnings estimates, US growth (nice but not essential for me) online sales, rising market cap and near immunity to the pandemic? I realize there may be very few, if any, that meet all those criteria, but do you see any that come close?
Thanks and thanks again.
Peter

Q: Hi 5i,
A problem I have is selling winning stocks when I think they've reached their zenith, only to watch them continue to rise. Right now the "SELL ATZ" voice in my ear is pretty insistent and I need some counselling.
Given ATZ pays no dividend, the only reason to continue holding is more capital gain - do you think that's in the offing or do the underlying numbers and market circumstances suggest it's at or close to its zenith now, at 50 bucks?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Peter

Q: I've been watching ATZ with interest, and fear. Do you have any information on the present shipping chain tangles that are affecting so many shipments from Asia? If ATZ suddenly finds itself waiting for stock to arrive, quaterly figures could quickly deteriorate and stock prices could tumble. Or am I just seeing imaginary problems? Does ATZ have a Plan B if shipments of stock are delayed at point of shipment? To open a partial position now or wait for shipment problems to be resoved ... that is the question? Thanks for your continued help, Elmer.

Q: After your positive report as well as my portfolio analytics suggesting I buy more consumer cyclicals, I was enthusiastic to buy Aritzia.

After a sudden share price jump last week and your answer to Harry's question on Oct 18 about possible headwinds, I'm wondering whether LNF would be a better choice at this time.

Q: I am a recent subscriber, but have been around long enough to have taken your advice on TOI:CV. It has done quite well, thanks. I have my TFSA holding only one stock, BNS with the whole $75,000. It has essentially not moved in the last 6 months. Can you suggest one or two stocks that you feel have a similar potential as did TOI, as I would like to sell my BNS and move into something else?

Q: I admit to a "home country" bias, but try to temper that somewhat by investing in Canadian companies that derive significant portions of their income from outside Canada (e.g. I own AQN, ACO and others).
In this context, which do you see as a better fit as a consumer staple holding -- Aritzia or Gildan?
Or is it even, or also, a consumer staple or consumer discretionary question -- everyone needs basic clothing (Gildan) but fashion (Aritzia) is more discretionary?
