Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I am sorry to hear that you've decided to exclude dividends as an item separate from returns. I think yield and returns are quite different. I'm in retirement and by nature have little confidence in future growth, surmised from historical information and predictions. Simplistically, my general prejudice is to filter out anything which doesn't distribute half its profits.

Q: Hi Team,

On May 8 Mehran asked about HHF. Are there any other hedge funds out there (Canadian or US) that you like and how much of a total portfolio for a conservative investor would you suggest holding in this type of security?

Many thanks.

Michael

Q: A year or so ago 5i wrote in response to a question, "In the Stantec high-quality group we would place Cineplex, Enghouse, Constellation Software, Home Capital, Dollarama, Gildan, IPL, Winpak and Telus." I realize the response wasn't meant to include every high quality stock, but just looking for an update. I like to think Stella Jones SJ would be a good fit. Thank you.

Q: I'm wondering if you could share your opinion on the reported rumblings in the bond markets and the speculation that equity market trouble is sure to follow. The reference is to the U.S. Markets as far as I can tell. Do you think there's a clear and present danger to Canadian equities?
Thanks very much.

Q: Last night on BNN, Barry Schwartz suggested buying banks (TD and NA specifically) and holding them "forever". If memory serves me, Sherry Cooper has previously indicated that most of her retirement savings are in bank stocks as well, figuring that if they get wiped out, we'll all have bigger problems than the stock markets. Recognizing that managements and other things change and forever might not be quite the right time frame, if you were going to buy five or six stocks to hold for a very long time (over 15 years?), what names would you pick today? Would it depend if they were going to be held in a TFSA or an unregistered acount?

Thanks for your help.
