Q: I currently have $115 K saved in my children's RESP with the chikdren’s ages almost 14 (grade 9) and 12 (grade 7).

Currently I have $46,600 in 1-2 year GICs
$9K in Fortis
$25k in VDY
$35k in VFV

Considering cashing in Fortis or $10K of gains out of VFV for another GICs as I am concerned about markets and will need this money in the next 4-6 years for both children. Should I stay at 60/40 or reduce to 50/50 at this point?

Q: I am retired and have gone with a strategy of owing Canadian Dividend Aristocrat stocks in my unregistered account and Canadian ETFs in my TFSA. My RRSP and LIRAs holds US ad International ETFs such as VYM. I would appreciate you opinion on this strategy and can you make a recommendation for the best ETF for my TFSA.

Q: Hi,
I’m looking at a long term (30 year) rrsp portfolio. What do you think of making it up of these 4 etfs? Do you think long term it’s better to have the hedged or unhedged versions (where applicable)? I’m thinking 25%vfv, 25%vef, 20%xqq and 20%vdy. Then 10% in cash for buying dips when I see them. I’ll also be using any drips (even proxy drips if needed) as well as adding new funds every 3-6 months and rebalancing annually (unless there’s some major movement before that). Do you see any areas that are too redundant or underrepresented?

Thanks

Q: Do you think these 3 ETFs, provide a diversified enough portfolio? I plan to invest equal amounts in these ETFs and re-balance every year. They would be held in a RRSP, RESP and TFSA. Does it matter in which accounts I hold these ETFs? I plan to supplement my income I receive when I retire. I am basically looking to put together a portfolio that I know will be around long after I die. I'm only 30, but I've been listening to John Bogle and Warren Buffett speak about what they believe individual investors should do with their money.

Q: Hi 5i,

Can you recommend a Dividend Appreciation/Growers ETF for each of the following regions: CAD, US, Europe, Asia? I would prefer to have all CAD Hedged.

Thx

Q: Hi5I
We are giving our 3 grandchildren $5000.00 each, so they can each open a TFSA account. Our intention is to give them the same amount for the following three years.
Considering the size of the deposit, and the fees for the accounts, your recommendation on where to open the accounts and what to buy inside the accounts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks MJ

Q: I own both of these ETFs and want to drop one to lessen my CAN exposure. I'm leaning towards dropping VDY because it is in my TFSA (ZDV is in a margin) and my portfolio would benefit from cutting some weight in financials (VDY is heavier than ZDV in this sector).
Can an argument be made for keeping VDY?

Just renewed! Thanks.

Q: Hello 5i Team,

Which one of these ETF's would you prefer for a basket of diversified dividend stocks held for the long term (10-20yrs) in a non-reg account with contributions reinvested annually?

Thanks

Q: HI Peter and team. AM I better off investing in an ETF such as VDY or the top 10 - 15 holdings? WIth a 0.22 mer and a $100,000 investment it appears I would still be ahead based on 10 or 15 trades per year given $10 cost per trade. I would also realize a higher avg Yield vs the ETF yield. Also where can I find a list of the complete holdings of an ETF vs just the top 10 that most sites list. I very much appreciate your expertise and advice. I'm

Q: I've been struggling to find out what to do with all the cash I was holding in my portfolios so a while back I used VDY as sort of a money market fund, for me that's pretty conservative. I realize that VDY is basically buying the tsx financial sector, I'm up about 4-5% with this right now but do realize that with a correction in the financials it could come down some. I'm looking for something "safer" to park my money in.

Q: Hi,

This is follow up to James' question about living off the dividends from these ETFs.

ETFs = XTR,FIE,XEI,VDY,XHY

Suppose I convert my portfolio(s) over to equal weights of these ETFs and start living off the distributions ~ 5.5% yield. I'm ok with the tax situation. I can account for inflation.

What other risks am I taking? When we see another 2001 or 2008 what is the possible impact to the ETF values & the distributions?

I'm not looking for a guess (and certainly not a promise) as to what will happen in the future. I'm looking for a list of additional things that I need to consider about this strategy for my own risk management before pulling the plug on my current working life. A handful of "what-ifs" to consider would be great.

Thanks,

Gord

Q: Hello 5i team, Iam planning to convert a LIRA into a LIF in the coming months. I was thinking of using a fixed-payout strategy of just using the distribution's as income and staying within the LIF rules, using one or a combination of the following ETF'S = XTR,FIE,XEI,do you see any problem's here or can you suggest any other income vehicle or ETF'S
Thank's once again, James

Q: My son is in his mid-thirties and has very limited time available to actively follow/trade the markets. He is looking for a simple, passive investment portfolio with very broad exposure, a modest dividend focus, and that is rebalanced, ideally, once a year. Can you comment on the following proposed portfolio and allocations, assuming about $100k? Are there any alternatives he should consider? Should he modify his approach in a TSFA/RRSP? Thanks.

VAB - 20% (Canadian bonds)
VCN - 15% (Canadian equity)
VDY - 15% (Canadian dividend)
VXC - 50% (Global equity excluding Canada)

Q: Peter and team,
I have about 18K to invest in my daughters RESP which will be required in the following two years, and about 24K to invest in a non reg account for her to use in around two to six years timeframe. This is not money I can afford to loose so I need to invest it carefully. Some say I should be keeping it in a GIC due to the timeframe, however that will not even keep up with the cost of living.
Any suggestions please?
