Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Retired, dividend-income investor. I hold AQN in my RRSP, bought it in 2011 at $5.60 (not a typo) and have trimmed it multiple times due to asset allocation. Not that it matters, but I am still up 15% over my ACB.

Looking forward is what really matters. AQN is up roughly 20% from it's low of around $9/share. Q#1 = Do you think AQN can continue their short term performance?

I hold AQN, FTS, TRP, NNRG, NRGI, and utility-energy stocks held within CDZ, ZLB, ZWC. Q#2 = What conservative utility or infrastructure stocks should I consider that might "fill the gap" in my current holdings? Please list 4-6 stocks for me to do further research on.

Q#3 = Should a component of "renewables" be a consideration? That was one of the reasons for holding AQN. Ideas?

So the bottom line is = what's done is done. AQN appears to be starting to recover and there is always the chance of being bought out.
1. Hold of sell,
2. Replace with what,
3. Include renewables?

Thanks for your help....Steve

Q: Am retired and looking for regular income from dividend paying stocks.
Is there such a thing as a EFT that holds only dividend producing stocks that then pays out the dividends on a regular basis? If so can you suggest any?

Q: I've held a full position in HAL for just over 3yrs all dividends reinvested, gain of 12%. My original plan was to hold for the longer term, DCA reinvesting any dividends. The annual portfolio turnover 78% is twice the category average for the group as per Morningstar. I'm not sure how you make better returns with that amount of trading.
Can you share your thoughts on portfolio turnover
Offer other options on this type of ETF
Regards,
Tom

Q: From a dividend growth and overall return perspective, could you please rank the above etfs ? I do not need the income so my preference would go to HXT. Am I getting exposed to a lot more volatility in your opinion ?

Q: Retired, dividend-income investor. Happy owner of CDZ. I just saw the new asset allocation effective Jan 31/23. I believe they reconstitute the ETF annually. Pretty big change in the finance %. It jumped from 24% to 30%.

Am I correct that this has to do with some of their constituent holdings not meeting the required criteria of increasing their dividend over the past year? I have gone through their website and am trying to figure out what criteria they use to select their individual holdings and how they design their sector allocations. Can you help me understand this a little better?

Thanks for your help...much appreciated...Steve

Q: I am looking for ETFs that trade on the TSX with a yield of at least 4-5%. From the income portfolio, I see CPD (preferreds) / CVD (convertible) / XHY (US HY) / ZRE (REITs), and I am also aware of ZWU (Utilities) / ZWB (Banks).

Are there any others that don't have much overlap with the above that you would recommend?

Q: I have an RESP for my nephew who is in grade 12 now and attending a college in the fall. His parents are not great savers, and I don't have children, so I'm fine to subsidize his education. I currently hold only CDZ and TD in the RESP and would like to add some additional cash soon.

What's your advice on how to proceed? Do I add to one or both, or would I be better to invest in CASH or PSA.

Thanks,
Robert

Q: Hi there. I am looking for a dividend growth company or ETF to add to our kids RESP with a 10 year time horizon. What do you recommend from the 5i Research universe to initiate a position in now. After the initial purchase, I intend to dollar cost average on an ongoing basis. I already have Telus, Abbvie, and BMO in two other accounts and those are my highest dividend payers.

Q: "Is there a Canadian équivalent ETF ,or close to it,to this excellent sélection approach and choice of Cies like this US ETF?"
Sorry to repeat the question..
Concerning this recent question,I meant : a CDN ETF composed of Canadian stocks only, since the selection method of US stocks for SCHD is excellent,I wonder if there is a best Canadian ETF equivalent for CDN stocks

Q: Can you please tell me a bit more about ZDV, especially about the rule-based methodology including minimum 3-year dividend growth, pay out ratios and yield (read this in the G&M)? ZDV has more financials - is this a good time to hold more Bank stocks? Would ZDV be a good compliment to CDZ that I already hold?
Thanks!

Q: Can gou compare and contrast these 2 etfs. I've always held CDZ and paid the higher MER on the basis that research backs dividend growers performing better in the long run. However VDY seems to be performing as good or better. Considering a switch to take advantage of the lower mer and thus higher divided yield.

Q: Can you compare and contrast these 2 etfs. I've always leaned towards CDZ on the basis that the research shows dvd growers perform statistically better in the long run and thus also paying the higher MER was worth doing. However it seems VDY is performing as good or better and provides a higher dvd stream. I'm thinking I should swap.
