Q: Hi- do you have a few names that are high risk oil companies. I look at someone like athabasca, and it needs 60 dollar oil, but has 275m in cash as of dec 2019. Any companies that are cash rich and can be sat on for a year or two while things play out. Athabasca specifcally has been here before... WCP also looks compelling with hedges and cash flow.

Q: I know you are hesitant to make a bullish call on oil stocks at this point,

But there does seem to be some upward momentum currently and I have heard that with oil in the 50-60$ range, that there are a number of companies that are so "lean" now after years of expense reductions that they are well positioned to generate significant earnings growth.

So .... could this be one of the those Warren Buffet moments when one buys when everyone "hates" it the most.?

Thanks again.

PS Saw your note re service changes over the Christmas / New Year's period .... thanks for the heads up .... great to see you and your awesome team adjust your pace .... enjoy the season and maybe take time to "smell the roses".

And hope everyone reads your note to minimize "crankiness" .

Q: I keep reading all the questions about oil and gas stocks and I can't help but think "why do we keep holding on?"
I signed on with Liberty International (David Driscoll) a few years ago, When I handed over my portfolio, I had 40 names in the oil and natural gas space, He looked at them and asked "what"s with all the oil and gas stocks?" I didn't know how to answer him. They were all the usual suspects we keep hearing about on BNN. He said "we're getting rid of them all." I refused. He said "fine, we'll keep a pipeline."
That was the best investment advice in my life. That moment saved me hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars...literally...and a ton of grief.

To my fellow 5i investors, my 2 cents of advice: don't overload on the oil and gas names. If you must, pick one, And only give it 5% of your allocation.
I've been trying to do this myself for 40 years. Some things are just better left to the pros: doctors, accountants, lawyers, chefs, general contractors, dentists, drywall tapers, money managers...

Q: My understanding is that transportation fuel costs, account for 70% of oil consumption. If that is somewhat correct, and the direction of car manufacturing is toward Tesla like vehicles, what is your long term view on oil. How does it get back to 100.00 with supply continuing to have a positive trend? Costs continue to rise?
Many thanks

Q: First year of my subscription. I am single, rent, retired and am 66 years old. Besides CPP and OAS (fully clawed back) have a DB pension which covers my daily living needs so I treat it as my bond portfolio. Have a non-registered account from the proceeds of my house sale and collapsing my RRSP. Account objective is dividend/growth and not to lose money.
Looking at my Oil & Gas holdings I have HSE and XEG, the latter underwater by 20%.
Other energy-related holdings are ALA, BEP.un, ENB, FTS, H, IPL, SPB, and RNW all of which are underwater from -2 to -53% in this market.
I have owned a TFSA since 2009 and made full contributions every year mostly from savings from pension income. It holds AQN and IPL in the energy related sector.
Thinking of switching XEG for OIL or ZEO today in non-reg and booking the tax loss against previous 2015 capital gains. Is it a reasonable switch and are there any tax implications; i.e. trx not subject to 30 day rule?

Q: Please rank four of your favourite stocks in the oil industry in order of fundamental stability and potential for growth as well as risk. Would you be entering this sector at this time? What industry risks do you foresee? I have never invested in this area so basically, I am looking for your guidance.

Q: It appears that sometime in the medium to long term future the majority of the vehicles on the road will be electric. My question is, with the stock market being forward looking, at what point does this start to affect oil related stocks. Maybe it has started to affect them now. I have heard a few people say they are staying away from oil now because of this. I know there are a lot of factors on this topic but I would appreciate your educated guess.

Q: Hi there,

How are the quarterly results from Canada Goose? It appears that the company is doing well internationally. What is your take on the stock and the company? This this a good time to step in?

Also, I own KL which seems to be an outlier in the gold sector. If there was an equivalent to KL, but in the oil space, what would it be?

Thanks!

Q: Hi there,

I've been out of oil for a few years now. In your opinion is now the time to get back in? Is there legs behind the recent rally? I was looking at Yangarra and Parex - do you prefer one over the other? Or another name entirely?

Thank you!

Q: MPL printed an article today from the BMG Group about a gold backed petro Yuan, this is one paragraph from the article.
In November 2017, China, India, Russia, Brazil and South Africa, the major producers and users of gold, agreed to establish their own gold trading system using their own currencies, thereby bypassing the US dollar. Implementation will begin in 2018.
Your opinion please, Thanks

Q: Good morning 5i,
Just a comment / follow-up to Irshad's question re the price of oil and CDN producers today ... I think it's prudent, for those that may be unaware, to point out that while WTI may be priced in the $60's, this is not the price that many CDN producers receive for their oil. We are exporting (95% to USA, who don't need it, but will buy it way cheaper) a bitumen blend called Western Canadian Select, and it's price is way lower, almost as low as his "$29 comment" ... the "differential spread" has never been greater.
Regards, Rod C.
