Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: You recently commented that 18% of a portfolio in utilities is fairly high, especially in a time of rising interest rates and might reduce across the board here.
Can you recommend your top 3 stock picks with dividends that you feel will benefit the most in this time of rising interest rates? Not including the big banks.

Q: I have a portfolio that mostly mirrors your balanced portfolio with some stocks from your growth portfolio. In tech I hold PHO instead of SYZ which has worked out great. However in consumer discretionary I hold a 2% position in XTC instead of MG which has not been as great. I also hold TOY (5.6%) and DOO (3.5%) instead of GC. I have a 1.5% cash position to put to work and am trying to decide on adding a half position in GC or adding to XTC. Alternatively I could sell XTC at a loss and buy a full position(3%+) in MG or GC. Your ideas would be appreciated. Thank you

Q: Exco technologies continues to make 52 weeks lows down 45% since 2015. Canadian insider reports pretty heavy insider trading in the recent early summer pop up. Should that be concerning?

Is there a good reason to hold this and how does it current p/e compare to its historic average. Dividend of 3.3% is also very high; what does that represent of payout ratio?

Thanks

Q: In a diversified RRSP account I have 10% industrials with positions in XTC, ZCL, NFI, and MG. Have been patient with XTC and can remain so, but do own MG already. The account is more growthy given time to need. Looking for a second opinion on my thought to swap XTC for DOO/CAE/BYD. Would you make the switch? If so to witch name? I don't trade a lot but do watch the names and account fairly closely.

Q: I own XTC, which is currently down 15% in my portfolio. I'm considering locking in a capital loss for tax purposes, then purchasing MG, which has shown a much better trend and better earnings results. Do you think locking in a loss in XTC (possibly to re-purchase after 30 days), and purchasing MG would be a reasonable move at this time?

Q: I am retired and living on dividend income. I going to initiate a position in PKI based on your outlook and now consider PKI a Strong Buy after another 4% drop since your Aug 1 comment:
Aug1- "The $3 decline in July seems a bit much to us, and its prospects remain good with its recent acquisitions. We would view it as a BUY up to a reasonable portfolio position."
Aug 3-"Analysts expect lower earnings for 2017 and very strong growth in 2018. We continue to like its long term prospects."

I'm really attracted to investing in companies like this. Companies that are financially strong and fair/under-valued. But impatient investors aren't willing to hold for the long term prospects and are selling off because the strong growth won't be realised for 6-12 months.
Can you identify other dividend paying companies in a similar situation, that are undervalued but should realise strong growth and therefore share price in the next 6-12 months.

Q: Please comment on the XTC results. Would you still hold it? I also have MG and LNR. equal weight, all represent 9% of my portfolio. Making money on all. Should I make any changes here? Looking for growth.
Thank You for excellent service.

Q: From the growth portfolio do you see any upside on the horizon for these 4 names, I have a large amount of small stock holdings that are under .05% of my portfolio value hence trying to sell some off and pick just 4 names to clean things up, I will still maintain a well diversified portfolio even after clearing out the low percentage stocks.
Are there 4 others names you would suggest if not the above.

Q: I am looking for an industrial income stock and am considering xtc and wsp. I think you would pick wsp because it is much bigger. I would like a yield greater than 3% and these two stocks yield just under 3%. I like the yield of Exchange Income, but am leery of the short situation. Would you please suggest a good industrial stock with a yield close to or exceeding 3%. Thanks.
