Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I am a retired, conservative, dividend-income investor and receive a pension, CPP and annuities. I own AD, ALA, AQN, BNS, BCE, CJ, CGX, ECI, FTS, PBH, RY, TRP, WCP, WEF, WSP, XIT, ZLB, RBC Cdn Equity Inc, Sentry Cdn Income and Sentry REIT.

I am almost fully invested with roughly 5% cash to top up my holdings, mostly in the industrial and consumer sectors and maybe a little in the financial sector. I have filtered it down to 4 candidates: ABT, KBL, MG and SLF.

Question 1 = are there any "red flags" within my current holdings that I should consider selling?

Q 2 = are there other candidates, besides the 4 that I have selected, that I should consider buying, that would compliment my current holdings?

Q 3 = are there any liquidity issues (ABT, KBL)? I think I have selected ok candidates.

Q 4 = Depending on the candidate, should I wait for the tax-loss season to wind down?

I am, for the most part, a buy-and-hold investor.

Thanks for your help,
Steve

Q: Good morning. I'm wondering if you would consider this a good entry point for KBL? Its RSI at 28 seems like this might be a good time to jump in but I wanted your take on its valuation. Is the forward P/E of 22.8 (according to Globeinvestor) reasonable for this company? After the excitement of DH this week, I'm thinking a "boring" stock like KBL might be a nice addition to my holdings. Thanks!

Q: These stocks are all down 2 to 7 percent in the last month. Given the experience of DH should I be concerned with any of these and sell?

Q: Could you suggest some candidates to buy during year-end tax loss selling, either from the 5i universe or more generally? I am considering BOX, DHX.B, VCM, KBL, DH. Your views on these five would be appreciated.

Q: I have watched as KBL has continued to drop. Although I like the diversity KBL provides to my portfolio, I am considering selling in order to preserve my capital gain. A ale would trigger capital gains, so I would prefer not to sell. I would appreciate your opinion on KBL and the tendency for the price to continue to fall. Also, what precipitated the significant dropping the first weeks of March this year, that drop appears to have been the catalyst for the continuing poor performance. Note I tried to go back to March to read 5i comments at that time but I could only go back as far as April, even when I enter K-Bro. as a symbol.

Q: Hi Peter & Team,

Your latest report on MDA ends with "We believe the lack of cooperation in the shares needs to be reflected with a downgrade in the rating."

Given that your last report for KBL gave it an A- rating, and it isn't performing as well as in the past, if you were writing a new report for KBL, would it also be downgraded a notch or two?

We hold KBL in several accounts, and I'm contemplating a switch in at least one account, but welcome your valued advice, as always, before making any moves.

Q: I manage finances for my 93 year-old mother-in-law (she is demented but fortunately still a nice lady). Her investments are mostly dividend-paying stocks. I do need to raise some capital for her care. I am hesitating between selling shares in K-Bro Linen versus Boston Pizza Royalties IF. I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you.

Q: Peter, as I build up new cash balances to invest, I need to resist the temptation to keep buying new stocks but, rather, to add to existing positions - simply to avoid to point where I'd have 80 or more stocks! I have an account that currently holds modest positions in Exco, K-Bro, and Tourmaline. With a 5-year time frame, which of those three would you expect to produce the best total gain? Or, since the account also holds the Horizons ETF HXT, would you be inclined to prefer that broad basket (although, obviously, diversification is not my concern!). Thank you.

Q: I currently own Amaya and would like to sell and buy either CXR, KBL or PBH. How would you rank these 3 stocks for 2 year total return potential and why.

Q: K-Bro is near an 18 month low. The dividend is now 3% and I'm tempted to buy it as a long-term hold for relative safety and some income. (I'm content with 5 or 6 percent long-term annually.) But I'm a bit concerned about the 'falling knife'. I've read your recent comments on the company. Are you aware of any new or more serious concerns to explain the drops? Do you suggest I wait, or is this as good a time as any to buy? Thanks!

Q: Peter, I'm looking to invest in one of the three companies above. I won't need to touch the investment for 5 - 10 years, and I would be content with an average annual return of 6 percent (including dividends). Please rank these three in order, based on the combined criteria of capital preservation and the goal of achieving the hoped-for 6% or better. (My portfolio is otherwise diversified.) Thank you.

Q: I usually review questions & answers when I am thinking of a buy or sell. Very often you have recently commented on the stock I am looking at. So today I looked for recent comments on KBL but the new search tells me there have been no questions yet.
So I have two questions; a) what is your current comment on KBL and b) any idea why I could not pull up anything by searching the Q&As.
Thanks
