Q: I have decided to pay off my mortgage, primarily because I think I have had a good run with equity returns outperforming by a good margin the cost of carrying my mortgage. Although I am not concerned about a large correction I think the risk return is swinging a bit more towards paying off the 2.79% mortgage. I will likely sell 3 or 4 of the following to do so: bbd, mal, pza, rsi, rus, tpk, wjx, dht. Please rank in order in which you would sell the companies listed, you can assume none will adversely affect my current asset allocation. I realize it is quite a mixed bag...but they are some of the ones I hold that aren't in your balanced portfolio so kills 2 birds by getting them out of my current holdings...

Q: Hi Peter,
I am considering buying TPK and RPI.UN for a long term hold. I am 69 and am interested in dividend yield to augment my pension. I consider these "filler stocks" that I buy when I have cash that I don't need to use. If these are not good candidates, can you suggest others that are under the $30. range. Thanks for your input.

Q: I am a new member. So, sorry I am not familiar with how reports get published. I just read report on TPK with C rating. This is my own preference but as a member, I would like to know about the companies with possible good future growth which can enhance our portfolio value. In that perspective, the reason behind publishing report on TPK.And how would this report is helping me.
Thanks so much, I am a big fan of your questions-answers, and you guys are doing fabulous job.

Q: Hello,

I have some cash in my TFSA. My return in this account has not been good.
I am looking to invest in a growth stock. Of all of these stocks I listed, which one would you recommend for me to invest in?

And if there is a better stock, which would you recommend?
Thank you.

Q: Further to my questions on Ten Peaks. I still don't understand how the convertible debenture effectively doubles the outstanding share count once exercised at $8.25. This is what is implied in he quarterly financials when calculating EPS on a basic and fully diluted basis. My calculation says a $15 million debenture converted at $8.25 equates to approx 1.8 million shares. The company now has approx 9 million shares outstanding. What am I missing?

Q: The convertible debenture with Mill Road Capital has me confused. If it converts into shares at $8.25/share that means the company would issue 1.8 million shares to pay back the $15 million in dentures. In addition the company has the option to pay the interest for the first 2 years "in kind" which I assume means shares of the company and not cups of coffee :) If this option is exercised the principal amount is increased by the amount of interest owing. I don't get it. If the company chooses this option it sounds like they are paying the interest charges twice, once in kind and the second time by having the principal amount of the debenture increased. Is this normal? Thirdly the debenture has a net settlement feature. It says the company can pay off the face value of the debenture in cash and any excess value of the underlying security in shares. Why does the company have to pay back more than the face value of the security if the shares are trading above the conversion price? Am I understanding this correctly?

Q: The company actually earned 16 cents per share for the Q. Because they did a convertible debenture financing, they now have to show fully diluted results as well ( being 8 cents a share) if the debenture is converted. At a conversion price of $8.75, while the share price is now $6.15 that s not likely to happen, and if it does, then the debt level will be greatly reduced. If the conversion gets converted that would only happen if the company's earnings ( or a takeover, buyout) drove up the share price. I think the results were fine. And they would have been better but for the timing of delivery so the 2nd q ought to benefit from this delay.

Q: I note that buyouts are increasing among the small cap stocks. Today alone Lumenpulse and Canam are going private at nice premiums. IRD also gone this month. I am not sure if this is the start of a trend. Are there any companies you would consider as buy-out targets in the next 9 months? I have my eye on Ten Peaks.

Q: I have listed the small/med/cap companies I have on my watch list and am seeking your advise as to which three companies you would recommend my investing in from this list. (or some other that I have not listed) Many of these companies you have recommended on BNN. I look forward to your answer.
