Q: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year all at 5i
This is another crystal ball question. I have a sizable loss on Shopify and today is the last day to claim it for this year. I am caught in the headlights a bit, though, thinking that January could be a very good month for stocks and that i would be better to wait until towards the end of January. What kind of chances do you give it for rising a lot in January?
Thanks

Q: Retired conservative investor whose only tech holding is HTA ( 5% total portfolio). Looking at either CSU or Shopify as next purchase. Which of these would you prefer to “ dip your toe “ further into the tech sector ? Also, is my weighting of HTA appropriate ? Thanks. Derek.

Q: What is your opinion of Shopify as a worthwhile investment? Quite a drop in price over the last year from $180 to $48. What did they do wrong or is it a tech market pricing issue? Are they well managed - is their future positive? Recently watched Brian Madden of First Avenue on BNN he was very positive on this company.
Thanks

Q: I hold the above stocks in my Unregistered,TFSA,and RRIF accounts. I understand that as of January 1, 2023, the IRS will require a 10% withholding tax when Canadian residents sell US stocks. Does this rule apply to sell any of the above mentioned my stocks ?

2) If I sell above Stocks before end of 2022, will I avoid paying new IRS 2023 10% withholding tax?

Q: I currently have APPL at 1.47%, APPS at .37% and SHOP at .69% of my total portfolio. If I were to consolidate these three stocks into one, which would suggest?

Secondly, I know technically GOOG is classified as a communications stock. For the purposes of portfolio management, would you classify GOOG as 100% communications...or assign at least part of it to the tech sector? Thank you.

Q: Hi, BNN had a guest on Friday last week, Javed Mirza, who is the Chief Technical Strategist with Canaccord Genuity. He mentioned of a bull market cycle from 2018 to 2022, where Energy stocks enjoyed some of the best gains. As per his analysis, a new 4 years bull market cycle began this year (2022-26), where the best sectors to own will be Materials, Industrials and Financials. Interestingly, as per his view, Energy sector, which he strongly recommended in early 2020, has already run its course and these stocks are not likely to get further traction ( he expressed same views for Suncor ). Addressing a question on Shopify, he compared the chart with Bosch ( Ex Valeant Pharma ) and suggested that SHOP stock could languish for many years and should end up like Valeant. His advice was to stay away from Energy Sector and stocks like SHOP. 2-3 years ago, Mr Mirza, during an appearance on BNN, made a strong case to own Constellation Software, and he was spot on. I think, his view on the 3 favorite sectors, Materials/Gold, Industrials and Financials make some sense, but his comments on Energy Sector and SHOP left me confused. Would appreciate your thoughts !! Thank You
