Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Morn folks, growing frustrated at the lack of deployment of Knight's massive cash pile. Medical/recreational marijuana is here to stay and would have been nice to see Goodman & Board think "outside the box",and bankroll a reputable start up marihoochie company, think there would be tremendous potential and would certainly re-juvenate the stagnent stock price. Goodman & Board seem to be thinking in the Past, and not the Future in terms of shareholders. Think we need need Peter or Ryan on Board of Directors to jump start this company haha. OK, done with my rant, thanks for great Service.

Q: Hello 5i,

I have a unique and complex situation as I worked in the US for half my career and have investment portfolios in both countries with tax deferred, taxable cash and growth free accounts. In addition I carry some significant capital losses. I am 2 to 3 years away from retirement and although I should not be exploiting growth, the lure of using the capital losses is very compelling. I hold SHOP at a full position, KNX & DOL at half a position each, and GUD at a 1/4. My health care sector is also low.

I have a full position to buy with - GUD appears to be the only under performing choice at this time.

What else would you recommend I look at beyond the 4 candidates I have in my current scope.

Thank you

Steve

Q: Hi there, I watched a guest on market call yesterday (Jason Mann) discussing CGX and he was saying the payout ratio was over 100% and expected a dividend cut. Is 5i looking at different numbers and if so what payout ratio do you come up with. If it is over 100% would it not be a candidate for removal from the income portfolio?

On GUD you just answered a question from Brian approving of a move to transfer GUD from a regular acct into his tfsa to shelter future gains, which makes sense, but also to "crystalize losses". I thought the 30 day rule would apply in this case, would it not? I don't believe his loss would be allowed if he did this move. I know if he had a gain , he would have to report and pay cap gains on it. Funny how it only works one way in the govt's favor.

thanks Tom

Q: I joined 5i about 2 years ago and I started moving my investments from mutual funds to a mix of the balanced and growth portfolios. I have returns significantly higher than I had before I joined 5i so thank you for the great service.
In non registered accounts I currently have full positions in CAE, CLS, L, MG, NFI, PBH + WSP. In registered accounts I have full positions in GC, KXS, SHOP, PHO, AW.UN, SIS, TD + AEM. I have 1/2 positions in registered accounts in AVO, GUD, SGY, + TV .
Would you recommend adding to any of the 1/2 positions or buying 1/2 or full positions in different names. Risk profile isn't a problem and I have at least a 5 year outlook. Thanks.

Q: I own the above noted stocks relating to healthcare at roughly 1% weighting each. I am fine with hanging onto GUD and waiting but I was wondering if the other two are worth hanging onto or if I should move onto something else in the sector.
When adding more (approximately 5 to 10% of overall portfolio) to this sector would you recommend an etf or specific stocks?
Any recommendations (Canada, US or Int'l) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Brian

Q: Hi Peter,

SIS has grown to about 9% of my portfolio from an initial 6% and wondering if you think there's any more upside? My full positions are 5-7% so wondering if I should continue to hold or trim my position?

On the other hand GUD is down 20% and wondering if I should add more here or start a new position in CLS (I'm low on tech) if I do trim SIS. All of these are/will be in my TFSA.

Also, wondering about ECN, what will it take for it to break out above $4? It seems to be stuck below $4 for a long time now. I hold this in my RRSP.

Thanks for your advice as always.

Q: This list of companies from the Balanced Portfolio were all beaten up a bit last year. Which of these do you now consider buying opportunities? Are any of these on your list to watch & discard if performance doesn't improve? If I were to add some of these to my relatively diverse portfolio, how would you order them in terms of anticipated total returns?

Q: In early December I sold half of a position in GUD for tax loss purposes. To put the money to use I purchased a half position in PHO as a "temporary" replacement.
The plan was to then sell PHO and repurchase GUD after 30 days.
PHO has done reasonably well since then. GUD has also increased.
Based on a long term time frame and no sector impacts would you stick with the original plan and repurchase GUD to a full position or would you remain with a half position in each GUD and PHO?
