Q: Retired, conservative dividend-income investor with a "buy-and-hold & trim-add around a core position" strategy. At times like these, I take a fresh look at my holdings and ask two key questions. #1 = are there any of my equity holdings that have alarm bells going off? #2 = how safe are the dividends (knowing that no dividend is 100% secure)? The portfolio capital may rise or fall, but it is the continuation of the dividend that is more important.

For asset allocation purposes related to individual stocks (as opposed to sector allocations), I use the following:
5% targets = AQN, BCE, BNS, PBH, RY, TRP, WSP
4% targets = AD, AW, CSH, NWC
2% targets = LNF, MG, NTR
ETF targets = roughly 3-7%

Q#1 = are there any of these equities that you hear alarm bells?
Q#2 = are there any of these equities where you foresee dividend risk?
Q#3 = any thoughts on how I have my asset allocations set up (knowing it is a very personal decision?

Take a bunch of credits. Thanks for your help...Steve

Q: I have CCL.B in a few of my portfolios; do you think its time to sell and replace? I allocate 50% of CCL.B to Consumer Staples and 50% to Materials. Right now CAE is the only Material security that interests me, are there others that you would recommend, I don't want MX. I have PBH and ATD.B in Consumer Staples and could add to either of these or are there others that I should consider. I'm a buy and hold type of investor; with a growth focus.

Q: I am underweight in these companies from your Balanced Portfolio and I have some money to buy into one of the above. It would not materially affect my sector weighting and dividends, while nice, do no affect my choices. Which one would you suggest for a long term hold?

Q: Recent reports on PBH suggest that while there is progress on the Asian Swine flu epidemic it is going to take some years to recover from - and pork prices in the local stores are still prohibitive. At the same time PBH has supposedly invested in several productive moves which should come into play in the first half of this year. Yet share price progress is modest, the shares are well priced and share price expectations do not encourage the idea that significant progress is anticipated. What is your take on these issues and do you know and have an opinion on the "meaningful moves" that this company has made? Thank you.

Q: Good day I have a large gain in the above stocks in an outside account. I am thinking of taking half off the table and putting it into a canadian dividend etf VDY. I understand that i would have to pay some tax but i would net a higher dividend from VDY than the other three and i live from my dividends. Or should i just leave them to grow as each is about a 4% position in my total portfolio. Could you please give me your thoughts on this....Gene

Q: I am a retired, conservative, dividend-income investor. I just sold CGX and need to replace it with something else in the Consumer sector. I currently own AW, NWC, PBH and love dividends.

Can you please give me 3 replacement options in the Consumer Cyclical space as well as 3 options in the Consumer Staples space? If it is possible to filter a dividend over 3%, that would be ideal...if not 3%, then try for > 2%.

Thanks...Steve

Q: I'm thinking of starting with a half position in one of these two companies. I don't currently have any companies in this area. I'm interested in safe dividends first and growth second and working on diversifying my portfolio. Which of the two would you buy at these prices and why please?

Thanks
Peter
