May I ask why you recommend buys pls? Thank you.

Q: ATD has had a very nice run over the past year. Having said that, do you view it as more of a defensive play that will not do as well relative to other positions if the Canadian economy starts to grow more rapidly or do you think it is the type of company that will do well relative to others in any economy? I am trying to figure out whether it is starting to look like a good time to trim it back any take some profits. Thanks as always.

Q: I want to buy the above 6 stocks at a full position of each in a balanced portfolio for a long time hold. Are there any you wouldn't buy at this time and continue to watch, or any you would buy a half position and watch? Thanks!

Q: Do you see ATD as priced-for-perfection right now? I increased my position after the hickup of ATD-Carrefour in Jan 2021, it could happen again. However, it does not look expensive. Is debt OK? Do you see any particular risks near term? Thanks.

Q: I’m trying to form a kind of hybrid of the Hodson and the Buffet approach to investing. Hodson: balanced portfolio. Buffet: a few excellent companies. So I would form a fairly balanced portfolio but be overweight considerably in a few.

Buffet says you are buying a piece of a business; you are not buying a stock. He and Munger don’t care about the stock market. They both say you don’t need very many stocks, no more than 5 or 6. They also say their approach is not for the average person, who usually doesn’t know how to value a business and should just stick to EFFs. Their approach is for someone who knows how to analyze and value a business. Peter Hodson and 5i do know how to analyze and value a business. (And in answers to questions 5i has also said several times that the way to build wealth is to own a small concentrated portfolio.)

On the other hand, 5i is all about building and rebalancing a diversified portfolio, covering all, or almost all, sectors. This approach is more concentrated than an ETF, but not as concentrated as a Buffet/Munger small set of quality companies. I don’t know anything about Sees Candy, Geiko, or Coke. But they certainly do.

If Buffet/Munger were looking only at Canadian companies, which few would they want to own? Any size, any sector. Just outstanding businesses.

Q: You hold PKI.ca in the Income Portfolio and ATD in the Balanced Portfolio.

PKI has a higher dividend.

Is there an issue holding both in the same account? Is there any overlap?

Q: I have 7000$ to allocate into my TFSA which of these companies would be your favourite and which would be your least favourite, please rate them out of 10(1 meaning least favourite and 10 being most favourite). Lastly at what entry price would you be a buyer of these companies? Please indicate an entry price for each company.

In your answer to Gerry's question on Feb 16, you mentioned that CSU and ATB have been the best Canadian compounders over the last ten years. You added DOL, BYD, TFII, BN, CLL.B, TRI based on historical performance and you are expecting LMN.V, TVK, HPS.A, TOI, GSY to be potential Canadian compounders in the future.

1. Would YOU still invest in CSU, ATB, DOL, BYD, TFII, BN, CLL.B, TRI with the same conviction and weighting?
2. Could you please provide a similar answer but for the US market? Please provide 10 or so best US compounders based on historical performance that YOU think investors should keep investing in and 5 or so US companies that YOU would buy as potential US compounders in the future.

According to the information provided by my broker, the CEO of ATD has reduced the number of common shares held from about 970,000 shares to just over 300,000 in January 2024.
Do you view this as significant ?

- I'm trying to help out a family member that is 67 years old, that is not financially literate, has no investments, no savings...
- He will be receiving approx $ 80k in an inheritance in the next 6 months...

- He Already blew through a previous inheritance of over $100k in about 3 years

- I am setting up a TFSA Investment/Trading account for him and doing a Financial Intervention , So To Speak to get him Back on track...

- His minimum basic expenses like rent is covered by payments he receives..., But additional living expenses and extra income is what I want to help him with and extend the life of the extra inheritance he will be receiving...

- The listed stocks are the ones I am planning on recommending for him to look at and research...

I have both companies a while, costco (6% of portfolio) and atd.b (2.5% of portfolio). Inside "your" balance portfolio would you recommend approximately 4% in both??

Q: Hello Peter and 5i team,
My TFSA contains the aforementioned stocks in roughly even percentages except for nominal investments in Park Lawn and DRX. I would like to make my annual contribution to one or some of these companies and would like to know what your order of preference would be for buys/adds at this time. Please also include Celestica in your considerations.
Also, are there any companies in this list that you would consider undervalued at this time?
