Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: On a past BNN Market Call appearance by Ryan, I believe he commented on Kinaxis saying something along the lines that this stock could drop 20% in a year but investors need to understand the long term outlook for this stock and should continue to hold.

What other US or Canadian stocks would you place in this same category? Would Shopify or Tucows be included in this list?

I'm reading a book called The Big Money: Seven Steps to Picking Great Stocks and Finding Financial Security by Frederick R. Kobrick and he shares a similar view of thinking big for the long term. It's a great read and I highly recommend it.

Q: Can you rank the stocks best to worst in your opinion. These are the stock s that are in my technology sector (17% weighting). Would you add, swap or remove any of them? My portfolio holdings/thoughts are very similar to your BE Portfolio. Thank you and great job.

Q: I have half positions in CCL.B, ZCL, GSY,ECI and PHO; full positions in SIS,KXS,SHOP,PBH and GUD. Growth from 'good' companies is my only consideration and I have a 10 year timeline. These companies are part of the growth portion of a balanced portfolio.
Please provide guidance on the following 2 questions:
Could you rank my half position companies with growth potential as the sole criterion.
Is it reasonable to increase one's stake beyond a full position in any company that has excellent future prospects? If yes, please rank my full position companies based on growth potential.
Thanks for your excellent service, as always!

Q: i am thinking about full position in both SIS and PBH. I bought a little SIS before Xmas but wonder if I should move in another direction on these 2 as they have done very well recently. I have been contemplating for a while but wonder if I should wait for a pull back. Would KXS or GSY be another option? I am not to heavy in any of these sectors.
On another note I bought SHOP a while back, thanks! Your team has been a wealth of knowledge.

Q: Hello,

I'm looking at initiating a position in either KXS or PHO for an aggressive growth pick within my TFSA. I like the larger size and scope of KXS but am intrigued by the increasing volume of PHO which seems to be missing from the KXS chart. I'm also less familiar with PHO (no 5i Report) - could you quickly highlight their customer base, and which company/industry/product is responsible for their current stock profile?

Thanks,

Cam.

Q: Good morning 5i team,

I’m considering moving on from Linamar and CGI group in search of better growth prospects. I still like both companies, and believe they still have a good outlook, however, after holding each for some time I’ve been growing restless with the share prices seemingly stuck in the mud. Perhaps I’m just being impatient, but I cant help but wonder if these holdings are dead money. At least for the next year or two anyway.

I’m considering switching out Linamar for either New Flyer Industries, or Premium Brands Holdings, and CGI for either Kinaxis or Celestica.

Could you please give your opinion on whether it’s worth being patient with LNR/GIB.A, or a good idea to move on? And if moving on is recommended, would you consider the alternatives I’ve mentioned as good replacements with growth for the next 1-2 years in mind?

As always, thank you for your excellent insight and advice.
Tristan.

Q: I am selling my DH holding in the very near future, and want to replace it with another company in the technology sector. I plan to take about a 4% position with my proceeds from the DH sale along with some additional uninvested capital. Along with my plan to increase my holding in ABT to about 2%, this move would increase my technology holdings to about 6%. I would strongly prefer to buy one company rather than two, and I am debating between KXS and OTEX. I know that KXS appears poised for further growth, while OTEX is more of a mature company, with a track record to support it. If you had to choose one, would you go with the proven entity in OTEX, or the company that appears poised for significant growth in KXS; or would you split the investment and buy both? I am trying to limit my holdings, as I have found that I had too many small positions that didn't really add to my bottom line while increasing my bookkeeping efforts. I would like to take the position some time next week, as I have learned that timing the market does not prove to be as valuable in the long run as spending time in the market. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your response.

Q: I am a 21 year old investor with a long investment horizon. In my TFSA, both CPH and MRE have stagnated and I am thinking of selling these and moving on. Would you endorse this move and if so, could you recommend your top 2 names (any sector) to replace them?

Thank You!
