Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I have a DOY balanced portfolio (Alpha-Balanced for guidance) , with less than 10 year timeframe.
I’m underweight communication services, and energy. Not a fan at this stage of oil or precious metals. Overweight in industrials and technology.
My concern is with my overweight in technology. Reading a number of opinion articles that refer to the tech boom as another dot.com. The reply often is oh but this is different.
Here’s my two cents worth especially related to tech stocks I own. First of all investors/traders seem to be jumping in and out of technology based on the latest COVID-19 / vaccine news.
Re KXS; will still be in demand long after Covid-19. LSPD; somewhat sensitive to Covid-19 but have done a good job diversifying and adapting restaurant services etc. Will do well in recovery.
Maybe more acquisitions.
SHOP; like Amazon will carry on even though the valuation is high. Younger generation will still shop on line.
Now comes the tricky part. WELL and VEEV. I don’t quite have a handle on. Not sure if the demand for their service will still be there post COVID-19.
Your comments and/or thought would be greatly appreciated. I have a feeling that many of your clients would be interested in what you have to say.
I’m an experienced investor but don’t have access to the kinds of info I once did. I depend a great deal on your unbiased expert opinion.
Merry Christmas

Roy

Q: This question is about valuations and growth. How do you determine when a valuation is too high? To me it seems extremely hard to me.

I've owed KXS since $80 (thank you btw) and still have most of my position at the current price, but isn't the valuation like 150X earnings and 20x fwd sales or something?

Same with PLTR: my cost base is $22/share, and it seems like it has tremendous growth prospects... but a really high valuation (what is the fwd valuation btw?).

At what point would you sell (KXS and PLTR for example) just on valuation alone even with amazing growth?

Sorry if this is poorly worded... but I think you get the idea of what i am trying to say.

Q: I hold the above companies in my TFSA and they represent my Tech holdings. I am getting a little overweight in my tech sector and am wondering if any of my holdings are in essence duplications. If so could you recommend which ones to sell.
I have a list of buys, including CAE, TFII, XBC, GOOS, and would redeploy the capital plus some of my cash to these positions. Of my potential buys in what order would you see as the best opportunities.

Q: I need to raise some cash. Could you recommend which 6 of the above list you would sell first. Keeping in mind that I would be rebuying some of those as cash again becomes available.
Thanks for your advice.

Q: I am looking to buy a position in U.US (Unity Software), but I need to sell one of the other listed companies to raise the cash to do this. Which one would you sell (or trim) to do this, taking into consideration this would be a long term investment. I am looking for maximum share price appreciation. Thanks

Shane.

Q: My parents (late 70's) will be receiving proceeds from the sale of a US asset and are looking to add to their existing investment portfolio (an additional 25%) . They are financially stable with a long term balanced portfolio and are interested in allocating the new cash into quality, long term positions with growth potential. US, Canada and industry non specific. What would you recommend as your top 5 US and Canadian positions and why?

Q: With the increase in price of KXS,DSG, SHOP, REAL and LSPD I now have a total of 23% of my portfolio in these shares. I have taken profits and reduced my position each of them. The only concerns I have going forward is with KXS and DSG. Ross Healy on BNN did not have a very Rosie picture for KXS. I know that different views is what makes a market. You continue to be much more positive on KXS and continue to recommend it. DSG andKXS are somewhat similar. I respect your opinion, would you recommend selling either one? If so which? I view many of these guest as having a person interest in recommendations. I always take them with a grain of salt. I have seen this in my previous life while working for a major investment firm.

Q: Hi,
This is a hypothetical question, but out of the four stocks listed, which one would you consider that has the potential to be the next Shopify, or is there another that I have not listed?

Thanks

Q: Could you rank these companies in order of preference for future performance? Investing a lump sum gradually over the next 6 to 12 months and I have zero tech exposure right now.

Thanks,
Jason

Q: Hi. My daughter is looking to add a US tech stock to a portfolio that follows your balanced portfolio with some added US stocks and International ETFs. She currently owns 4 tech stocks; CSU, LSPD, KXS and NVDA. She is 21 yo and looking for long term growth. We are wondering if U is a better addition than TEAM (I am already following TEAM as I own it, but would consider selling it for a better company as I like to limit myself to following about 35 stocks). Any better suggestions? TTD? We both already own VEEV (under healthcare).

Q: Could you please rank above Tech stocks in order of preference that you would purchase or hold right now. I have all except CRWD and U, but they seem to be coming up in your lists more frequently.

Q: I've noticed that KXS has lost over 20% in the last 10 days. and is down about 3% to day. This appears to be a much larger drop that most of the tech companies. I know it is still up 25% for the year but its come down from around being up 80% earlier this month. Is there an explanation for this what seems to me be an unusually large drop?
Thank you
Steve
