Q: Hi Peter & 5i: I have held a number of REITs in an account where maintaining the level of income is a significant purpose. With the potential for rising interest rates in the next few years, I’d like to raise the growth potential in the portfolio and reduce the rate sensitivity. With that in mind, and assuming no overweight positions result, what would you think of moving some money from the REITs into a pairing of Canexus (CUS) and Chemtrade (CHE.UN)? I realize that the level of yield implies risk and that a move like this could be viewed as exchanging one kind of risk for another. But I think that both CUS and CHE.UN are currently making efforts to grow, have more of an industrial orientation, and provide yields that can help maintain the portfolio income. I realize that both are somewhat cyclical businesses but my sense is that cyclical potential is part of the attraction at the current stage of their cycles. Does another company/stock come to mind that might be a better candidate for the kind of shift I am trying to make? The portfolio is already about market weight in lower yielding financials. Thanks for any ideas!

Q: Hi Peter and team

I have watched Chem Trade logistics (CHE.UN)for years and it seems extremely well managed. I have it owned off-and one for a long time. I bought about 4000 shares in 2009 at a very low price and then foolishly sold out for a double at around $7- $8. I then realized my mistake and re purchased it around $15. The share price has not done a lot since but the dividends have rolled in without interruption as they did right through the 2008 crisis. Currently it has a %7 yield and a payout ratio of around 50%. It is now looking at a very big deal with General Chemical and may have to compete with some big players like Apollo Global to pull it off. So my question is (i) what is not to like? and do they have a chance to pull off this latest deal in competition with the financial engineers / hedge funds. I would appreciate your opinion on their prospects including their continuation of the old trust structure. Thanks

Ross

Q: I have been following Chemtrade CHE.UN for sometime looking to add to my RRSP on a pullback. Like it for its good and stable yield. I noticed you cover Canexus CUS in your summary and it looks like a similar company with comparable yield. Which of these would you prefer and which would provide better growth in price and dividend. I notice that CUS has had quite a sell off recently. Is this a good buying opportunity.
