Q: Hello,

My partner and I heard about 5i from a friend whose been using you for many years. You came with the highest recommendation.

I feel like I should be copying one of your portfolios, especially due to my lack of knowledge, but it is very important for me that my investments to follow my ethics.

I would like to know which companies on your balanced and growth portfolios would be highest on positive environmental, social and corporate governance, which are low and should be switched and for which companies. I'm happy to do research, but I'm struggling to navigate the important statistics and feeling incompetent in finding good resources. I have seen your ESG scores (https://www.5iresearch.ca/blog/ESG-tsx-companies) and would be keen to know where to find information on how they are created. I would also appreciate other resources that you think would assist in building a portfolio, or simply which companies you would put on it.

Thank-you,

Q: Given the bounce back has been "quicker" than expected, what would be your top 5 US and CDN growth picks ranked in order with a strong management and balance sheet that would be considered "on sale" still from the Covid effects? Given I have a 5-10 year timeframe. Thanks.

Q: Your Flash Update review of BAD was on-the-whole encouraging, but when I look at price action over 2014 to 2019, I see a safe but essentially static business. Yes, its dividend is secure, but any Big 5 bank pays twice as much. Given the effects of the current shutdown on municipal budgets, and the carnage still underway in the oil patch, I have to wonder if its appreciation potential is now baked-in. What am I missing?

Q: I currently own these stocks and am unfortunately under water on all of them.
Am considering selling two of these to incur a capital loss. Which of the two do you suggest I should keep?
With the funds raised from the sale I am considering doubling down on the remaining two. Or, adding either a Canadian or U.S. bank as another alternative. Would appreciate you comments on this strategy. And which Canadian bank or U.S. bank would you prefer.

Q: Hello 5i,
As a pensioner who requires dividends for my income, I have been looking at the above names to potentially add over the next year or so. It is my belief (uneducated guess) that it might take that long before we see any solid bottom and subsequent recovery begin.
In that vein, out of the above, how would you rank these based on the following:
1. Safety of company through a one year to 16 month recession.
2. Safety of the dividend through this same period.
3. Confidence in management team
4. Sector vulnerability
5. Value at current levels
6. Any other considerations, warnings or caveats for any of these ??
i.e. some of these have a decent 5i rating (B or higher), but the rating dates back to 2019, some as early as the summer.
And, finally, are there any suggestions you might have that are not on this list that deserve serious consideration in place of any of the above?
I am in no rush for an answer so take as long as you need to consider this question and deduct as many credits as you see fit - I should have enough to cover it. I hope that this question might also prove beneficial to other 5i members who rely on dividends for income.
All the best to everyone in this very trying and uncertain time!!! Be safe above all!!
Thanks to all at 5i!!
Cheers,
Mike

Q: Hi Peter and Ryan,
I am looking to take advantage from the current market dip and add the the above securities and ETF to my RRSP Portfolio. My time frame is 5 to 10 years. with adding the above I will be having all the 5i balanced portfolio stocks included. In addition I am adding some ETF and other stock that I think it can help my portfolio. Appreciate you advise of which stock look good at this time to buy (please rank). Is there any of the list I should avoid. Do you have other suggestions for good quality stocks and ETF (in the US and Canada) that have a good growth potential.
Thanks,
YR

Q: I'm surprised that at 1 PM eastern time, that there have been no questions about BAD on a day the stock is up 4.2%. So here goes: the only news so far is of a dividend of 57 cents per share. No news of 4th quarter results yet. Is this enough to move the stock over 4%? According to Scotia iTrade, earnings are on a downward trend with 4th quarter expected at 29 cents and 1st quarter at 25 cents. I'm not sure why I would buy BAD at this point.

Many of the fundamentals are better than the industry but how important is that if there is still limited capital gains available for now. The stock is trying to break above the 20 day and 50 day MAs and is bouncing off a support established last February. But so far, momentum indicators lack enthusiasm.
