Q: Hello Folks:

Now that Chairman Powell has clearly stated that people should NOT expect aggressive rate cuts, how do you think it will impact Small caps? Will they languish for some more time?

IF, a big IF, Small caps do come alive, do you think one should hold more of Small cap growth or Small cap Value?

Also your word of wisdom about buying Small caps over Mid caps? Wouldn't the latter (Mid caps) benefit more if the interest rates remain the same, more or less? Here the assumption is that the rate cuts will benefit Small caps.

Many thanks in advance!

Q: CALF (81 %) has led IWO (50 %) and IJT (59 %) in 5-yr returns, yet has fallen behind the other 2 in 1-yr returns (about 11 % vs 30+ %). Can you please provide a reason for that and also comment on which might do better in the next few years? Thank you.

Q: Hello 5i,

We have a little cash to add to our equity bucket. We have a 1/3 positions in IWO, IJT, and IJH. Would you recommend we add to those positions or do you see more value in a new 1/4 position into XSMO or GSC prior to the rate hike?

Are small caps too risky for a TFSA?

Thank you

Q: Good afternoon 5i
A number of people have asked about the best small cap etf. You have sometimes mentioned ijt as a good one. But, lately you have been recommending ijr. In the answers 5i always mentions whether or not someone on staff holds the given stock or etf. I was curious as to wht you would say that ijr is your preferred but not own it and own ijt, though
Thanks

Q: i would like to increase my US equity exposure which largely consists of VUN and VIG currently. I don't have a specific small cap holding but feel the lagging performance might indicate it is a good time to buy TQSM. Would you advocate buying now or waiting until October?
Thanks.

Q: I am interested in buying some mid- to small-cap stocks. I am tracking some of the ones you mentioned and am considering them.

For non-experts though, it seems like it would be better to go the ETF route on such companies. Do you agree and can you recommend a couple of options in CAD and USD.

Q: I recently retired and looking to place some of my savings into the market with a 5 year horizon at which time I will re-evaluate. Will tolerate a moderate to light risk. Could you please recommend 3 or 4 stocks or etf’s for my TFSA and 5-6 stocks for growth. Appreciate all your efforts. Thank you. Brian

Q: Indications are that the market breathe is improving and therefore various analysts are recommending the small cap Russel 2000 index. Would you agree and therefore have a suggestion or suggestions of how to invest in this potential opportunity. My other question is would there be a Russell 2000 ETF that you would recommend and a Russell 2000 high growth ETF that you know of?

Thank you

Q: I am looking for a US small cap ETF that is hedged to the CAD. I have been looking at XSU. Fundata in the globe and mail indicates that it follows the Dow Jones US small cap RT index but has been doing worse the this index. My questions are:
1) Do all small caps follow the Dow Jones US small cap RT index?
2) what is your impression of XSU?
3) is there another US small cap ETF that you would recommend?
thanks

Q: I know you don't believe in timing the market but after the last few years i've ended up with a fair bit of cash on sidelines, yielding around 5%.
Post pivot i'm now thinking about when/how to deploy. Assuming interest rates have peaked and we start seeing cuts in 2024 i expect cash yields to start decreasing as well.
So if you wanted to "broadly" deploy your cash reserves throughout 2024 how would you proceed? Thinking some mix of SPY, RSP, EMV (much smaller allocation) as I have retained most of my high convinction Canadian stocks.
Dollar Cost Average monthly or quarterly
Wait for next broad pullback, we know it's coming just not sure when. Can still get a nice cash yield while waiting.

Q: The magnificent 7 have had a nice run in 2023. Assuming that the market is broadening out, can you suggest around 5 to 10 US stocks and/or ETFs where money is rotating to. Medium risk stocks. Also what sectors should benefit in the next phase of the economic cycle?

Q: I am looking to set up an RESP for grandchildren aged 8 and 6 with about $40k that will be added to annually. I am thinking of purchasing 8 stocks in roughly equal amounts - ISRG, CROX, GOOG, NVDA, BN, LMN, SMCI, HPS.A

Is 8 stocks too limiting and should I look at ETFs for some sectors or should this give the plan a good start and greater diversification can occur as the plan grows?

Anything you see here that raises a red flag or are there other stocks I should consider?

Appreciate your insight.

Q: The U.S. is growing much faster than Canada. Canada’s much slower economic growth relative to the U.S. seems to be related namely mortgage debt, Given this situation, can you suggest 1) Individual U.S. stocks for capital gain 2) Individual U.S. stocks that pay dividends, and 3) U.S. ETFs? Thank you
