Q: Hi There,
This is a two part question regarding my kids RESP account.
The first question, I hold a full position of REI.UN in this account and just learned that as of November, Riocan has suspended their DRIP program. In light of this and the recent weakness, I am considering selling REI.UN and replacing it with CSH.UN. Is this something you think would be prudent, or should I replace it with something other than CSH.UN? (see second part of question)
If I replace REI.UN with CSH.UN I will still have enough cash to buy a position in two of the following stocks, DOL, NFI, GC, PHO, GSY .
In this account I currently hold BNS, MG, FFH,OTEX & REI.UN with a five plus year time frame.
Thank you for your assistance.

Q: Good afternoon,

I have enough money to add a 5% position in one of the above companies. I know you like them all. Is there a particular one that jumps out at you at today's levels that you may consider a buy above the others? Growth being the main consideration, to be held inside a TFSA. Thanks for the great service. - Jeff

Q: When determining geographic allocation of a portfolio, is it more appropriate to categorize a company based on where the majority of they business is transacted rather than where they are domiciled?

For example, is New Flyer better classified as US for geographic allocation purposes since 90% of their revenue currently comes from the US, or BAM.A as international since 90.4% of their assets under management are outside of Canada and spread across the world?

Also along these lines, is it worth the (very small) effort to sub-allocate companies that have meaningful exposure to more than one broad geographic area, e.g. classify approx. 1/2 of BNS as Canadian and 1/2 as emerging markets based on their business operations?

I ask this in the context of your previous comments that a 45%/35%/15%/5% CAD/US/INTL/EM allocation is appropriate for an average Canadian investor. Thanks as always for your sapient and perspicuous advice!

Q: Reviewing my portfolio for year end and find myself low in industrials. I currently hold the above stocks and would like your opinion on whether I should increase any or all of the above (currently all equal weighting) or add to this list?

Q: Hello Peter, Ryan and company!

First off, congratulations on the Balanced Portfolio once again beating the TSX Index! Not an easy feat, since typically most paid money managers cannot.

Looking at 2018, with the U.S. tax reform Bill likely becoming a law today, what stocks covered by 5i benefit from a lower U.S. corporate tax rate and immediate expensing of capital purchases?

Happy Holidays to you and your family,
Angelo

Q: I have a portfolio modeled after your balanced portfolio with a few additions/ substitutions from the growth portfolio. My wife holds BIP.UN in a taxable account where it may be suitable to take profits this year rather than in the future. Would you sell and replace with either AVO or NFI at the current time? I guess I am asking if you expect more growth from AVO/NFI than BIP going forward. Thanks

Q: I am reviewing my portfolio and find myself woefully short of exposure to industrials. Could you list your 5 favourite Canadian industrials in order of preference. Many thanks and have a great holiday season.

Q: I am trying to understand how NFI deserves an A- rating. Please appreciate that this is a learning opportunity on my part as I`ve made (too many) mistakes in the past. I see a company that has had excellent fundamentals (i.e. 19.7/20.7% revenue/EPS growth) over the past 5 years but only has a 4.9% revenue growth over the next year. The company's balance sheet is so/so. The companies last quarter was disappointing. The big advantage I constantly read about is its backlog (and this is not a sign of growth). This sounds like a company that was great in the past but appears to have few specifics mentioned about having a great future . What is it that we do not see? Your in-depth comments are appreciated.
Thank You.

Q: Good morning Gentlemen.
I need to re-balance my Industrial sector.
Actual holdings BAD 1%, ATA 1.5%, SIS 3.3%, and WSP 3.4%.
By selling BAD (1%) I will have 5% to add to the sector.
Can you please suggest 2 or 3 Can or US solid mid-cap stocks for at least 5 years.
Thanks
Best Regards
