Q: Hi

I am looking at Home Capital. The market cap is ± $1.5 billion dollars. The balance sheet indicates that Home capital has $1.2 billion in cash, $535 million available for sale securities and $2.6 billion in senior debt. I calculate the enterprise value at ± $2.365 billion.

The net income for the past twelve months stands at $247 million. The net income for the quarter ending December 31st was $50 million or $200 on an annual basis. Income and cash flow provided by operating activities for the year ending in 2016 were respectively $789 and $561 million. The cash flow looks unreasonably high. Is Home capital really generating that much cash ? If Home capital can earn $200 million in net income and $500 in cash flow for the current fiscal year, would you say that the company is selling at a discount?

Also, I am aware there is a cloud over the unexplained departure of the CEO, the alleged mortgage fraud and the mortgage rles have changed. Why is it that a publicly traded company do not have the obligation to explain why the CEO was fired?

Q: I have a significant exposure to HCG which I want to reduce. I have been slowly selling some of my HCG shares the past few years, but I incur significant gains that I must pay taxes. My average cost is less than $3.00 per share. I was thinking of buying more HCG shares to increase my average cost and then sell within the year thereby paying less taxes. Do you think this is a sound strategy?

Q: Hi Peter, Some spring cleaning and making room for new purchases.
I am still having some legacy stocks from BE PORTFOLIO - AYA, CGX, HCG.
Are they sill keep or let them go. The intent would be to replace with AIF CLS, GUD and add on to CXI. Is this sounds good to you. THANKS AS ALWAYS.

Q: I've been following the Home Capital Group challenges from the sidelines. Given the valuation and what I see as pretty stable earnings and a sustainable dividend, I'm thinking of starting a position via selling puts but I'm not sure the dust has settled on the dismissal of the CEO yet. I'm worried there may be another shoe to drop like financials restating or another governance issue that the company hasn't shared yet? My thinking is that if any new problems contributed to the CEO being let go, the company would have had to make that public by now. What do you think?

Thanks
Peter

Q: I watched Cohodes on BNN this morning, and he didn't offer anything remotely substantial to back up his claims. It seems to me there are two real issues with the company 1) did they fully disclose in a timely manner the amount of fraudulent mortgages some of their brokers wrote and 2) are their loan loss provisions high enough considering those mortgages and their overall riskier loan portfolio. I obviously don't know the answer to the first, and for the second, I think the answer is no, they aren't high enough. Thoughts?

Q: I have accounts at multiple CDIC insured lenders. One of them is Oaken Financial which is composed of CDIC insured Home Bank and Home Trust. I'm concerned about the ongoing problems with parent Home Capital; one thing after another. What's your best estimate of the likelihood of a bankruptcy, serious financial issue etc.with Home Capital which would trigger defaults at the subsidiaries so that I would be dealing with the CDIC regarding my GICs. Thanks

Q: Hello 5i team:
I understand that there are some issues regarding the lending practices of Home Trust and Equitable Trust. I understand that there some advisories to avoid adding new funds to these HISAs. Are their High Interest Savings Accounts-HISA-safe? I presume 100k CDIC safety net applies. Should one move the money anyway out of these HISA?
What are the other safer alternatives?
Many thanks.
Mano.
