Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Feel free to disregard this question if its not the type of thing you're looking to get into.

Do you have any thoughts on Marc Cohodes? Raises red flags for me when I see a guy based in the US but specializing in shorting the (much smaller) Canadian market. Does he have a good reputation in financial circles?

Any thoughts on his recent interview on BNN? To me, it looked like if he was given 2 more minutes of air time his answers would have devolved to include a zombie apocalypse scenario.

Thanks again for your opinions.

Q: Hi Peter,Ryan et al. My daughter age 32 has $32K to invest in her TFSA. My initial thought was a half position in CAO and KXS along with full positions in BNS. ATD.B CTC.A,PBH,
and HCG. Any suggestions and comments would be appreciated for at least a 3 year time frame.
Thanks in advance.

Q: I bought Home Capital before it ran into trouble with some of the lenders. I hung on and then I got a notice about a Dutch auction. How is that different from a company just buying it's own shares on the open market? Do you see a benefit to this auction? I read that Home Capital will soon have insured lending. Could these two events move the stock out of the dump?

Q: Hi, thanks very much for the 17% gain in just 7 weeks with CUS!! I have this in my TFSA and am now considering selling and replacing it with either RRX, HCG, KXS or DBO. Assuming diversification is not an issue, which do you see as the best upside potential? Or is it better to hold CUS for a little longer?
Thanks again! Ian

Q: I like HCG for its decent and growing dividend as well as low P/E multiple and O.K. growth prospects. However, I have been trimming it to get it down to a 5% position. What stock with a decent dividend and valuation profile would you recommend as a replacement? I already have full positions in BNS, NA, TRP, OTC, CNR, MDA, ATD, HCG as well as 2/3 positions in BAM, FTS and AD plus a 1/2 position in T and some broad US ETFs. I really appreciate your service and the recent changes to the site are excellent.
Thanks

Q: Further to the Dutch auction, I am trying to figure out the affect this auction may have on the current and future stock price. When exactly does the company buy the stock? Do they do one big purchase on Apr 15 or buy daily along the way? Will the stock stay between $34 - $38 during the auction period or if the stock goes above $38 does the company end the auction? Finally, by putting a purchase price with a ceiling of $38 is the company saying that is what they think the stock is worth?

Apprecitate your insight.

Q: Psychologically, I am not usually too bothered by volatility (I rode through the Financial Crisis without selling any stocks). However, I am now close to retirement, so my risk tolerance is declining. I own HCG and believe that it is hugely under valued at 5X earnings. The constant declines in HCG, even on good days in the market, are starting to give me doubts that perhaps I am missing a major negative factor in my valuation. Is this just negative sentiment? I would appreciate your view. Great service.
Thanks

Q: Hi,

I currently own HCG as part of my "financial" stocks. It is currently at about 2% of my holdings. I also own BNS (4%) and SLF (4%) as part of my financials. My target for financials is 12% (max 3 stocks). I also own HR.UN in about the same weighting for REIT exposure.

At today's prices, would you suggest increasing HCG to a full position (4%), sell it and switch to something else (ie. EFN or CXI), or do nothing?

Thank you

Q: I am thinking of buying ( what i hope) are a few bargain stocks before the end of the year. Was wondering whether you thought home capital would qualify. I notice that it didn't come up on your blog post on tax loss buys. Would you still see the companies in the blog as the most compelling today? How about possibilities for large cap stable compaies, like CP? I am sure there is at least more than one question here, so please deduct as required. Thanks and have a great holiday 5i team
