Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: ISRG is now under $200/share. I thought I would add to it if it fell below $200, and now that it has I am not sure if I should average down. I am down 40% already.

Why should I NOT average down at this time?

What price would you consider adding to this stock?

In this market many growth stocks have fallen considerably. I know you don't like averaging down, but at some point you will have to unless you have owned growthy stocks for 3 to 5 years then you are still positive.

thanks,
Paul

Q: Hello 5i Team,

I'm down considerably in these US stocks in a taxable account: APPS, DIS, DXCM, EXPI, FB, NET, NFLX, U, and UPST.

I would like to crystallize some losses.

Could you please suggest:

1. The stocks I should sell outright (and suggest a replacement);

2. The stocks I should sell and then re-buy in 30 days (and suggest a proxy); and

3. The stocks I should continue to hold.

Feel free to subtract as many credits as required.

Thank you for your valuable advice!

Q: Given the never ending downwards trend of the market, I want to invest $10000 in US market and $10000 in Canadian market in dividend stocks, with at least 5% dividend.

Can you recommend 3 US stocks and 3 Canadian stocks. ETFs are also acceptable.

Thanks

Q: I understand that you, generally, are not fans of ultra-short etfs and their ilk for various (very valid) reasons. However, if an exception were to be made, would it apply to the "Advisorshares Dorsey Wright Short"? Running it through the excellent Qtrade Portfolio Simulator in conjunction with my current portfolio produces excellent downside risk protection and diversification numbers with minimal reductions in performance, income and fee numbers. Your perspective would be much appreciated.
Regards
David

Q: If you bot the S+P 500 in early 2000, it would have taken until early 2013 to see a general return to profitability in your portfolio. If 1970 inflation type problems persist (high oil prices and high interest rates), when would your best guess be for high PE stocks( DOCU ,ROKU, ADBE , TTD ) to recover and return to the highs we saw recently? Is it possible we may need to wait that long?

Q: How would you invest 40K USD (which stocks and/or ETF's) in a balanced way, to limit downside risk, but maximize capital appreciation over the next 1-3 years. What timing would you use to make this investment. Thanks

Q: Good Morning.
I presently have UPST in a TFSA account. It is down significantly without tax loss sale possible. I have read that the new Apple payment system is disruptive to Block (Square) and to Affirm. What is your opinion on this and would UPST be significantly affected? Is it wise to continue to hold UPST or should I consider moving some funds into AAPL? Thank you.

Q: From one of your answers: "data analytics might be the next big business that gets adopted faster. Companies are quickly realizing that their ROI can improve quickly simply by knowing their customers better."

Can you name your top five in this area and why they have more upside than competitors?

Thank you!

Q: I need to increase telecom portion of my portfolio, so I am considering buying one of these four: BCE, Telus, VZ, and VOD. Can you please rate these companies at the scale of 1-10 in terms of anticipated total return and safety (I am a conservative investor) over the next 5-10 years. Please disregard tax credit and US withholding tax consideration as I am in a high tax bracket and, if needed, can free up some room in RRSP. Thanks.

Q: These stocks are in my portfolio and are way down from my cost. Are these worth holding, adding more or to sell and move on.

As these are in my non-registered account, I can use the capital loss to offset previous year year's gains. Could you suggest proxy for these in case I sell now for capital loss to buy them later.
