Investment Q&A

Q: I am managing RESPs for a two-year-old and a 4 -year -old grandchildren so there is a very long runway before they will need to start cashing in. The funds to invest available so far are fairly limited. I would like to add some US stocks but not sure it is worth the fees to convert to US $ and most of the good companies have high-priced shares. But I am familiar with Canadian Depositary Receipts (CDRs) and that there is a pretty wide selection of stocks available.
Can you suggest 4 of your favourite of these US CDRs that would be suitable for this type of investment?
Thank you.
David

Q: I know you guys try to answer exactly the question that was asked, which is good. However, I was surprised to see BB in a recent answer to your favourite Canadian companies that offer disruptive technology (AI, quantum, other). In the past, you were always negative on BB for its poor earnings record and shrinking revenue base, etc. Are you getting more positive on BB’s growth prospects or perhaps there are not that many Canadian companies to satisfy the question? Also, what would be your top 5 U.S. disruptive names, where the pickings are a lot thicker?
Thanks
Dave

Q: I currently have APPL at 1.47%, APPS at .37% and SHOP at .69% of my total portfolio. If I were to consolidate these three stocks into one, which would suggest?

Secondly, I know technically GOOG is classified as a communications stock. For the purposes of portfolio management, would you classify GOOG as 100% communications...or assign at least part of it to the tech sector? Thank you.

Q: Seems to me that the market must be offering up some strong, well run companies that, for some strange reason, are trading at much lower prices than what they deserve. These kinds companies pay a good dividend, have a strong balance sheet and their forward earnings look good and dependable. (perhaps you call these kinds of companies 'value' companies). Anway, here's my question, I would like to begin investing in them and would appreciate your opinion on a number of these value companies that I should consider adding to my portfolio. Perhaps 6 Canadian and 6 American. Thanks as always for your appreciated opinion.

Q: Hi, Can I get your thoughts on the materials sector and some of these companies? With China potentially opening up in 23 and this industry taking a downturn with these companies down approx 20% . This would seem a good time to start nibbling on these companies.

Q: Question about Veeva Systems.

From prior responses, it aligned with right now having a high valuation even after the past years negative performance. Is this a good entry point? This has been on my watchlist for years now and each time I look at it, the valuation is too expensive. But with the recent drop is this a good entry point or do you think the market is signalling that growth is slowing down?

Q: These are my candidates for tax loss selling. As a proxy for OKTA I intend to add to my existing position in CRWD, would you agree with that strategy? As for the other 3, I do not intend to buy proxies however I would consider repurchasing after 30 days. Do you suggest proxies for these 3? Also, would you repurchase. Thank you.

Q: I own shares in this company. Yesterday, Concord Acquisition and USDC Issuer Circle called off the SPAC merger. I would have thought Concord shares would have stopped trading but it appears not. I am assuming that my best option is to sell at this time as I don't see many other options. Would holding be of any value? Your thoughts? I truely believe in Circle's future. Thank You.

Q: What three US names would you suggest to buy that offer the best growth opportunities over the next year? What factors influence selecting each name?

Q: Below is an email from Interactive Brokers.
"As a result of recent US legislation under Internal Revenue Code Section 1446(f), gross proceeds from sales of and certain distributions from Publicly Traded Partnerships ("PTPs") held by non-US tax residents (both individuals and entities) will be subject to 10% withholding starting on January 1, 2023."

It is not clear to me that the 10% withholding tax is on the distributions only or 10 % tax will also be applicable to the total proceeds amount when I sell it ?
The company involved in my case is ET but can also be applicable to other publicly traded partnerships.
Thanks for looking into this.
