Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi Peter and Team!!! It gearing up for a great weekend weather wise, Yay! I have 16,000 to deploy in my RRSP. I would like to buy one or two ETFs that cover the US market, broadly and perhaps dividend aristocrats. VUN and VGG...are in Canadian funds. I would like the equivalent listed in US dollars, paying out in US dollars as well. I asked my investment advisor, and she could not give me any alternatives except for the SPY. Could you suggest some ? And on that topic, is it a good idea to hold another currency (in this case US dollars) in the RRSP, or just have an ETF representing the US market in Canadian funds? Thank you, and have a great weekend!! Cheers, Tamara

Q: I appreciate that this is a US holding and brand new, but just wanted to get your thoughts on its potential. Cyber security is getting a lot of press these days and I do not see this changing anytime soon. Is there any other ETF out there that does the same thing but with a lower MER?

Great job 5I Team and thanks.

Q: Can you please take a look at this company. Could you tell me what your views are based on the most recent contracts awarded and the backlog. Looking at the charts and financials this company looks less expensive than many other in the sector. If the current price looks expensive to you, could you share what metrics you would look at for selecting a purchase price. Thank you Jason N.

Q: UA recently posted earnings of $0.12 per share (down 14%)and revenues that were up 27% both on a 6 month basis. Guidance is that revenues for this year (2015) should grow 25% and operating income 14-15%. Last year earnings for the year were 0.95 so making a big assumption that EPS will grow also at 14% puts their P/E ratio at about $95/(0.95 x 1.14) ~ 88 !! Seems crazy high to me considering the stock is up over 7% today on the news. Am I looking at this right or is there some hidden value I'm not seeing? Thanks for your help as always.

Q: Can I have your opinion on this fund which focuses on increasing dividends of companies with solid balance sheets. Would this be appropriate for a registered account which I shall not need to touch for about 5 years?

Thanks

Q: What do you think about Cinemark?

Compared to CGX trading at 35X trailing earnings CNK (23X)is a lot cheaper and should be able to grow faster in its markets and do more acquisitions.

I'm thinking about adding some on this pull back and before Q2 earnings are released which should be a record (Furious 7 and Jurassic World)

Q: Hi 5i: Many thanks for the opinion on PANW and for the suggestion re FEYE. One problem I have with many high flying new companies is that most of the usual fundamental ratios are either negative or do not exist. What measures and/or ratios do you look at to assess the prospects of such companies? Thanks again.

Q: Hi, I've owned this awhile, but I seem to be getting no "pop' due to the rising USD vs CAD. Is it hedged against a rise in the USD? What I was wanting when I bought this, was US Large Cap Div exposure with a USD exposure vs CAD. Can you recommend another US index fund that would participate in the continued CAD decline?

Q: earlier today, July 23, your response concerning current valuation, etc., indicated your interest and experience with U.S. companies (earlier Fireye and others), will you be putting out a list of U.S. stocks - I currently hold only U.S. ETFs and would prefer individual stocks -thanks as always.

Q: Hi 5i: I've been considering a position in the tech security sector. Do you have any advice you could proffer on PANW (I know you don't specifically cover US stocks)? Any other suggestions for stocks in this sector? Many thanks.

Q: I wrote you on MIL.us in Oct 2014. Your comment resonated with me and I held on(I have a large capital loss which I cannot use). I am still perplexed about MIL. Biases aside, I would throw MIL overboard. However MIL shows it is as generally an excellent value-growth situation. MIL looks very good on commonly used metrics ---except for momentum.

MIL has proposed to buy a small bank in Europe and is making changes on its board. I am hard pressed to find anything overly negative on MIL-- certainly nothing that would prevent it from winning the passionate love of investors.

Are you aware of reason(s) that prevent MIL’s share price from getting off the mat? Is the attractive dividend vulnerable to cuts?

Q: I've been watching this slide down over the past couple of months then some big volume to the downside. I haven't seen any news releases. I own a fair bit around $12.75. Can you give me your thoughts....buy more or bail? I'm using it as straight US income.
Thanks and you guys are doing a great job!
