Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Follow the money. The company has been aggressively buying back shares during the past 12 months. Then there is very large insider selling by the the CEO followed by earnings that were poor and the share price is well below where most of the share repurchases occurred. If the company knew they were in a transition year (stated in their q release) and earnings were going to slow or falter should they have been buying shares back at 9-11 bucks? Or waiting till after this weak quarter to buy back shares at much better prices. Looks to me like the CEO is taking care of himself and not acting in our best interest. Your thoughts?

Q: Based on other responses you prefer OTEX over DSG when forced to choose. I understand one reason may be valuation, but please expand on your other reasons for that preference. For example, does OTEX have a better growth outlook. If one owned DSG currently but not OTEX would you sell DSG and buy OTEX. My preference is to own one or the other and trading commissions and taxes are not an issue. Thanks for your reply.

Q: Hello Peter and 5i team,
We were surprised to learn that TIO networks is being bought by pay pal. At an 86% gain we are very happy. Thank you for the recommendation. At the end of the month we will sell our holdings. It is in my wife's TFSA. Her current holdings are ET, KXS,GUD,LNR,SJ, and SYZ. This is our growth account as we have appropriate holdings of large caps and fixed income in our other accounts. In your opinion what would be a good addition to our current holdings or would you recommend adding to any of our current holdings?
thank you for the great service

Q: The good news: I bought Shopify in August '16 @ $51.
The bad news: Didn't buy enough!
The question: With the stock at $79.31 and the RSI at 87 (gasp)is adding more at this point just a bit crazy? What I am really doing is holding your feet to the fire on the notion of buying stocks that are running i.e. where is the break point when valuations and emotions are running too high and it's prudent to step back?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Q: The first thing this morning I read a BNN headline: "Shopify reports bigger loss as expenses soar." Well, one thing for sure that's soaring is shopify's stock, up 6% on almost triple volume on early trading.

If anyone can shed some light on this predicament, it would be 5i.

Thanks as always

Q: Looking to spread my Technology investments into US$ shares in one of these 3 positions. All seem to be doing extremely well and appear quite similar to each other. Share prices go from $128-$52-$17 and psychologically I have an aversion to paying over $100/share (I know there is no rational to that).
Would appreciate your analysis of these 3 and recommendation or any others in this arena.

thx
