Q: Where could a person find as near to "real time" as possible all of the holdings of mutual funds and ETF's - when looking at company documents on their websites they can be months behind current. I even tried SEDAR but could not find.

Q: Can you please comment about the Mawer funds Which are the top 3 or four? Which are better for a non-registered account, and is there one you recommend for a TFSA? I don't have a long time horizon, being 76, but am open to some risk (and reward), Is there another mutual fund company in Canada you can recommend that sells diversified holdings in Europe and the US? I'd like some holdings that aren't usually found in ETFs that are good value. Thanks for all your help.

Q: I bought this late 2018 when working with a Nesbitt Burns advisor. I have been very happy with the 2019 and 2020 results (gains of 44.68% and 92% respectively in those years). Fund focus and holdings seems to have changed this year and I am not impressed. Gain of 0.53% year to date. MER is high. Is it time to sell this one in 2 accounts and move on? One is held in RESP with a short horizon now. One is in a non registered account. Do you have replacement suggestions for growth, either equities or ETF.

Q: I have 2 American Equity mutual funds: BTG105 and MAW108 in an RRSP. I also own the ETF VFV. Performance wise BTG105 has lagged MAW108 and VFV in the last 6 months, 1 yr, 3 yr, 5yr, and 10 yr periods, so I will sell it. But should I replace it with MAW108 or VFV?

MAW108 appears to have outperformed VFV in the last 3 yr, 5yr and 10 yr periods, while VFV outperformed MAW108 in the last 1 yr.

Can you rank these 3, best to worst?

Would you replace BTG105 and MAW108 with VFV (and consolidate all 3 into 1), or keep both MAW108 and VFV for US equity exposure?

Thanks,
Paul

Q: Hello 5i Team,

I have a question about Mawer Funds. My wife and I currently hold about 500,00 across 4 account (2 TFSA’s 1 RRSP and 1 Cash). We own Mawer 130 and 104 split equally. We have enjoyed the funds and the performance and just wonder what your thoughts are about the size of the company. Do you see AUM growing to point where it could hinder performance. Thanks

Q: Any reasons that 5i can see that would account for the large difference in 10 year and 5 year in the performance of these companies that operate in similar industry. Companies outside of Canada have dramtically outperformed

10 year # including Div AON 470 MMC478 MFC 105 GWO 135 SLF 235

AON and MMC are 2 long term holdings in MAW120 and I am thinking of selling SLF and adding to MAW120

Q: I will soon start to withdraw from my RRSP and I am looking for tax saving ideas. I don’t like the idea that if I was hit by a bus tomorrow (aside from negative outcome for me) that my RRSP would be taxed at 53.53% and my dependents would be left with less than my hard-earned savings. I need your advice and yes I will look both ways before crossing the street. I recently listened to an audio by Allan Schieman where he suggests flow-through shares as a tax saving option. It seems like an interesting idea with some risk. I searched and found a Maple Leaf Fund managed by Craig Porter in BC. I suspect there are many pitfalls here, and I seek your advice and input on two questions i.e, 1. are there any reasonable/recommended flow-through share investment vehicles to help save taxes and 2. How else can I reduce RRSP withdrawal taxes? Please deduct as many questions you see fit. Thanks for your valuable advice.

Q: Hi 5i:

Can the Price to Earnings ratio (P/E) be used to determine the valuation of these yield plays or should I be looking at the Net Asset Value (NAV) instead?

Using P/E they rank cheapest to most expensive as: DFN, FIE, ZWC and EIT.UN. Is that accurate and if not, how would you rank them, cheapest to most expensive?

Thanks in advance,
Greg.
