Q: Morning,

CXR having a bit of an off day today. I wonder if you think the recent strength has been based on business fundamentals or speculation of a deal?

Assuming that there is no deal to be found, I think you might still find it a worthy hold as it was recently a 5i top pick on BNN. Is that still the case? What would be the argument in favour of buying more?

If a deal were to occur, within what time frame might it be reasonable to expect?

Q: This ETF in your Income P/F has been pretty flat since 5i started it, I think in 2014, and do you think it will remain a long term hold? How much of a hit would you expect it to take with a quarter point rise in the Fed rate and what is its duration? Thanks, J.

Q: Do you have an update on the approval process of SPB acquiring CUS? The last news on it was this will be known before Q2 of 2016. Can I assume that the decision will be handed down on or before June 30, 2016?

By the way, thank you for your blog on this merger that led me to take a position in these two companies (60% SPB, 40% CUS). This combo is currently up 24% in about 3 months time. Not bad. Since I have unusual high risk tolerance when it comes to investing, do you see the combined company (if approved) will be a viable long term hold?

My own investing philosophy is that you have to have commitment in a stock (you're either in, or out, and no sell half and wait and see). If I don't see it as a long term hold possibility I really should cash out now since I'm sitting on a good size gain for such a short time.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Q: Have difficulty understanding the sector alllocated for some stocks. For instance I thought NFI would definitely be Industrial but in my BMO portfolio it is classified as cons disc along with DOL - which I get. I want to increase my Industrial sector so could you go thru your three portfolios and list the stocks that would be classified in this sector? Thanks.

Q: Morning,

Just a question regarding how you determine returns for the model portfolios. Is it based on time weight return (Modified Dietz method), or is it a money weighted return (XIRR).

I'm trying to figure out how to determine my returns on my own portfolios, and have been using XIRR since the beginning, which do you use or suggest for a DIY investor?

Thanks.

Q: On Ron's question about short interest on CXRX, it is important to note the settlement date on the website is May 13. This is the same day Concordia released first quarter earnings and then the stock price has increased significantly. I suspect there was some short covering and the next update to the website for short interest will be key.

Q: I was just looking at the fundamentals provided by my on-line service CIBC Investors Edge for this company: when I look at EPS last 4 Qt it shows just over $5.00; yet, on a TTM EPS basis it shows -300%+ growth, debt to equity over 3X and negative ROE. How can you make $5.00 per share and have negative ROE: especially, when they have been making money and on a cash basis generating a ton of cash? What am I missing and is this a good stock to hold for a recovery??
