Q: Hello 5i team,
You mentioned in a question about the balance portfolio that some equities are on watch based on their slow or bad performance. One of these was CAE. It has been in a negative momentum decline since early 2021.

What are your thoughts about continuing to hold this stock going into 2024? It has a pretty decent backlog but will most if it come to fruition?

Thank You,
Andrew

Q: Hi 5i
I read your comments on recent DOO earnings...given your response highlighting slowing economy, share buybacks ect, would you be comfortable holding...I understand one qtr earnings loss does not constitute a trend , but the rush to the exits is of course worrisome,,,,,does your thesis change for this one?.

Recently acquired position.... Held on RRSP so no opportunity for tax loss selling..however 2 year outlook.

thx
jim

Q: In previous questions on BAM and BN 5i has generally shown a preference for BN for capital gains and BAM for income investors . In a question by Peter this morning 5i's answer showed a year to date return of 25% for BAM and 14% for BN {assuming that squiggly line in front of BN doesn't mean a loss } .... I realize the period is short but what is the historical return of each versus each other from inception of the newer security ? { And which one is the newer security and how long has it existed ? } ..... And if BN doesn't come out a clear winner please explain your thesis on income versus capital gains ?..... I am considering buying one of them in my RRIF ..... Thanks Garth

Q: I just dumped DOO for tax loss and need a proxy in that C Discretionary space. Can you advice on a couple of options?

I suspect some C Discretionary CO’s might have some momentum here as well.

Q: As a follow-up to Blake's question a couple of days ago, I see there was a negative report from Piper Sandler to underweight due to recent runup, valuations and reference to elements in 2024, Am now underweight SHOP and wondering whether I should keep accumulating or wait for a pullback. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your great service!

Q: Hello, Hammond Power stock has been so strong ( $52 to $82 ), within a span of less than 2 months. We have a very small 0.60% position, started around $57. Based on your favourable view and analysts' commentary, we want to build the position up to at least 1.5 - 2%. Recently stock has traded in $78-$82 range. Would it make sense to start accumulating in $75-78 range, or wait until next quarter ? Market strategists believe that small cap stocks have a lot of room to catch up. We are just a little concerned with HPS.a stock's incredible 200% + rise, this year and a possibility of stock to falter, for any reason. Thank You

Q: Hi, I noticed that in Wednesday's trading, around noon, someone placed two large BUY orders at $75.80, for 30k and 18k shares (Total trade value $3.6 mln ). Stock later traded down to $75.51. Within an hour, after the orders were filled, Someone placed exactly the same two SELL orders at $76.20, for 30k and 18k shares. The stock bounced back up and both Sell orders were filled just before market close. These were not Block Trades, as there were multiple sellers/buyers for all four orders. CIBC World Market was the broker, both for initial buy orders and later sell orders.

Assuming (safely), that both buy/sell orders originated from the same party, the trades resulted in a net profit of $19k, on a trade value of $3.6 mln. Are these, Day Traders ( using Margin or not ), making money on a small arbitrage? Is this type of activity not uncommon during volatile trading of a stock, like today ? Does it have a relevance to large interest in ATD stock, Or, there is just not much to read here ? I am just curious and trying to educate myself. Thank You

Q: Hi!

I am wondering if Peter can take some time to put together some words or a video about the Balanced Equity Portfolio and path forward here. We used to get regular commentary on the Portfolio via appearances on shows like Market Call but now we don't get that anymore due to the BNN change in their rules.

Can Peter walk through where he thinks things are headed, potential to find the next great multibagger stocks for the portfolio, view of the current holdings, etc.?

There's a number of solid long term companies in there. Do we ever see a point where they run their course and we sell them BEFORE they have problems and destroy a bunch of our value (thank god we trimmed some ATZ at $60 a little while ago!).

Thanks!
