Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Good day. I’ve been holding my stocks for just over 3 years without much adding subtracting and balancing. I have a few stocks that have declined quite a bit over that time. I think it’s time to sell a few of my losers and reinvest in better companies. The two equities in question are in a RRIF account. Magna is down 53% and CSW.B is down 31%. Each represents about 1% of my portfolio. Do these companies have a hope over the next 12 months or should I sell and move on. Can you recommend a replacement equity to purchase with the proceeds. Thanks

Q: Hello 5i,

Can you explain where money flows too during risk-off periods such as 2007-2009 and 2022. With the risk of no declines in the Fed rate this year what would the 2025 scenario look like for equities? Other than shorts, are there sectors that can flourish in a 2007-2009 and 2022 scenario?

At which point is it favourable to look at short-term and 5-10 year Treasuries?

Thank you for your service.

Q: We have ~$8000 in cash in a TFSA currently holding 5 securities (ATD, BCE, CP, GOOG, TECKa; [the portfolio is otherwise well-diversified with ~20 other securities held within RSP/non-registered accounts]), and would like to add to one or two of the positions. Which one or two would you recommend to add to these existing holdings (position size is not an issue), and why?

Q: The noted stocks are all very weak right now. I suppose on fears of recession and/or tariffs and/or specific company performance. Could you please rank these for potential to rebound in 2025? Any particularly attractive or unattractive right now to purchase with a brief rationale? Thanks!

Q: I am still buying and looking around for the best possibilities. Today the motley fool listed the three Canadian stocks they would buy, if they could only buy three. I notice that you seem quite strong on cls these days. And perhaps I see you putting the breaks on for hps. I may be wrong on this perception regarding hps. But, I think you are getting stronger on cls. What would be your 3 stocks Canadian? I am particularly interested in your main reason for liking cls.? It has not corrected. I know you like moment, though. I wonder whether I would’ve put shop in it’s place with the recent drop?

Q: Hi 5i
Dal reported today Fri Jan 10....Delta forecasts the strongest profit in its 100-year history.....it expects 2025 to be the most profitable year in the company's 100-year history...

Do you think Delta earning/outlook are reflective of the industry in general and specifically AC?

Could this be the positive catalyst the airline needs or is management so bad its still basically a coin toss on their outlook?

Is AC expected to meet their forecast earnings Feb 14?
I meant to add to this question that the american airlines , LUV, Ual are up today after delta earning while air canada continues its slide.. why do you think that is?
Thx

Q: Thanks for your reply on the effects of Trump tariffs on various stocks I own . I will be doing a little re-balancing based on your answers . However you didn't opine on two on the list . ENB which I would suspect may be affected by a tariff on oil and AND which has both Canadian and American operations though I'm not sure of how much of each they have. Thanks again for your terrific service ......

Q: Hi 5i

Please as many questions as needed.

I am heavily invested in stocks and want to raise cash, putting more money into bonds. I have about 10% in Canadian oil and gas, 5% gold stocks, and about 13% in uranium stocks. I am going to hold my gold and uranium.

What allocation would you suggest for a retiree in terms of portfolio holdings of gas and oil?

I am concerned about the possible coming tarriffs and the effect on the Canadian ecomomy. Most of my holdings are Canadian. A lot of these are in dividend stocks. I have held them through the past few years but I do need to increase the allocation to conservative investments. I plan to reduce most by about 20% or consider outright sells. I currently prefer to reduce downside risk than worry about the upside.

Can you help me decide from the viewpoint of possible tarriffs and effect on the Canadian economy which are at risk the most. Could you class these as hold, reduce or sell. I will hold all my U.S. stocks which are about 15% of my portfolio and haven't listed those here.

Thank you for your very helpful advice.

Q: Curious if you read Howard Marks latest "Memo" published yesterday https://www.oaktreecapital.com/insights/memo/on-bubble-watch ? He addressed issues of bubble characteristics, market concentration, market valuation and forward expectations relative to current market valuations. What is your impression of his Memo?

Thanks.

Q: Happy New Year! I bought TFII in June and it's now at the same level. I was thinking of selling a chunk to reinvest in LMN, DSG, DOL and BN. What would your opinion on a hypothetical sell/buy be? How would you rank the purchase stocks? Happy 2025!
