Q: Hi 5i,

Regarding insider trading, "acquisition under purchase/ownership plan" vs "acquisition in public market", which one is a better indicator of "buy"? could you please explain a little?
Thanks!

Q: Up until now, I have only part full or nearly full positions in a stock while trying to keep my total number of stocks under 30 in number. However, I am now considering taking a slightly different approach and buying a basket of some beaten-up stocks, likely from those noted above.

Since I am new to this strategy, my question is, what would you consider to be a useful percentage to devote to a stock that will allow for meaningful gains while limited individual risk? I'm thinking 1% is too little, 1.5% might be enough and certainly no more than 2%.

Your insight is appreciated.

regards,

Paul F.

Q: I have been sitting on the sidelines in cash since the beginning of the year in both my registered accounts. I am retired and living comfortably on pensions. I thought that this weeks fed decision would be the time to reconsider deploying my cash. In the meantime Russia invaded Ukraine. I read the daily comments and I'm seeing mixed messages e.g. by on the decline, buy into the fear, time to begin making your money work, which have all suggested that I should have been slowly reinvesting over the last several weeks while the markets have continued to decline. However other comments have suggested waiting until markets calm down.
I would prefer the latter suggestion of waiting until things calm down. Other than peace in the Ukraine, what should I be looking out for.
And re the mixed messages what would you do in my situtation, other than I should have done nothing at the beginning of the year!
Thanks Peter.

Q: I received Class Action Notice for the above company dated March 1, 2022. It seems I am qualified to participate in the settlement as I purchased securities during the period Feb. 23, 2018, to Oct. 15, 2018. Specifically, I bought 413 RHT shares at $1.81 on June 21, 2018, and sold at $0.365 on Oct. 17, 2018. If I submit the Claim form how this would benefit me? Would Confirmation of Purchase and Sell documents from the TD be sufficient proof of ownership documents? As always, thanks for your comments.

Q: Some small charities don't have broker accounts so you can use : https://www.canadahelps.org/fr/
They take a small commission and give the net results to your favorite charity and you get the tax receipt from Canadahelps. I used it 2 times and works just fine.

Q: Is it unique that Bank-owned TD Securities investment firm is the first house to pick up coverage (Buy - $8.50 target )on a small cap like ECO given that the Company is cash rich and requires no capital raise in the foreseeable future. Or is it that green products at ECO are just too interesting here?

Q: I've heard if there are 10 sellers to 1 buyer, it's time to hold your stomach and go all in.

If you were trying to determine the number of sellers of a stock vs. the number of buyers, what indicator or tool would you look to?

Q: Peter; As a long timer I need to reply to Jason’s comments re Unity. If Peter and Co. knew when the “ market” was going to suddenly dump any particular sector , Techs or otherwise , they would not be holding our hands now and still providing excellent advice on a daily basis - they’d be on their yatchs in a warm sunny place. If Jason knows when this might occur in the future please let us all know.

Q: KRR is 2.4% of my RRSP and I am up about 110% (also hold KRR and XGD in other accounts). Can you please tell me a bit more about KRR? I know it mines gold and nickel.
After significant declines with small caps like AT, XBC and REAL, I am a bit leery of KRR and wonder if its time to take a bit of profit, but I am reluctant with such good momentum. Can you please tell us again what dollar cap amount defines a small cap, med cap and large cap?
Thanks!!

Q: Paul asked today about the men/women investing performance. This is a good article which talks about a 5.2 million person, 10-year study which showed women average about 0.4% better than men annually, and the reasons were less frequent trading and not trying to time the market.

Q: Peter,

Go on the assumption that we will be in for a period of slow and consistent interest rate increases. I am very interested in how a bond fund could possibly increase the NAV during this period. For every uptick in the rates every single holding, whether of a short or long duration loses value. Do you agree ? What could a fund manager possibly do during this period to actually increase the NAV? I guess I am interested in the tricks of the trade or is it simply grab the umbrella and hope the rain eventually stops.

Thank you

Paul

Q: Peter,

You brought up a mention of female vs male investors in the recent edition of the Moneysaver. I assume you are speaking of the DIY group. What percentage of this group do you think are males vs females and the reasons for.

Thank you

Q: Hello,

After GOOG does their split - do you think the demand/trading volume for the CDR will dry up?

And in a worst case scenario that likely will never happen - if the CDR winds up and liquidates....would the holders get cash returned or would they receive proportional equivalent of US listed GOOG?

thank you and have a great weekend.

Q: Marked Private to allow 5i to vet for suitability. Please post publicly if you feel this post has any merit, otherwise just discard and accept my apologies.

Hello 5i and fellow members,
This is not a question, but just a comment about the current market turmoil. In reading the questions and answers over the past month or so, it is obvious that many members - and market participants writ large - are very much spooked these days.
Then, referencing a news item that speaks to the broad (very broad) mental health of Canadians and observing that anxiety, depression, worry, and fear have increased across the entire population as a result of 2+ years of Covid with no end in sight, geopolitical turmoil and uncertainty, and all of the other factors that cause the average citizen stress these days - the point is that even if one is not aware of it, one's mental health, outlook, perspective, etc. may not be as healthy, clear, and resilient as it was, say, three years ago. This means that there may be a fundamental, underlying, reason for one's reaction to events today that may not have been present in other circumstances even where the market itself was performing horribly.
I know my anxiety has increased but I am trying to school myself to put it into a broader context and not engage in hasty reactions to a horrible and uncertain market based on fear that may originate from two years plus of pandemic. The bad news seems to just keep piling on, but I am optimistic that in 3 years things will look radically different - and better! My response has been to do nothing major to our portfolio other than normal re-balancing where required.
I wish everyone out there all the best and hope this might help one in contextualizing their own reaction to events.
Cheers,
Mike

Q: Hello again - after reading an earlier question asked by someone spooked by the market in it current catatonic state, I recalled graphs I reviewed this morning showing institutional buying cross referenced with share prices. For many of my tech holdings ( eg. DOCN, GLBE, ESTC, PD, etc ) the graphs show steady purchasing levels by institutions even as share prices are plunging. My take on institutional investors is they are manage other people's money by and large. They are not prone to the panic, or emotional reaction, that retail investors like myself experience when we hit these air pockets. Helpful charts, at least for me and while I'm burning up one of my question credits I'd like to add how I have greatly benefited by the Portfolio Analysis tool since its inception. Using several of your suggestions, I have built a diversified portfolio that is providing a lot of insulation from the current market gale. Thanks AL

Q: I feel a bit lost and don't know what to do. Many of the stocks I own are down, some by a lot. Oh yes, it has been painful. Thinking of the long term, I did very little when the carnage started, and waited for things to settle. Perhaps they have or are getting close and I am getting ready to figure out what to do. But it is difficult to come to grips with some of the large losses, especially in holdings that I previously thought were pretty solid. For example, MG and PBH (and a number of others) . I see there are questions about these 2, so I am not looking necessarily for info about them; but more, do I sell stocks that I thought were, and still think are, good long term holdings, to move to other stocks that are said to have, currently, more potential? I see your comments about not sector jumping. But how do I adjust, if I get past my pain?

Though some are from registered accounts, there are losses in taxable accounts; how much consideration is to be given to that issue?
Many thanks for your excellent service.
